The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through customer service, compassion, and conduct consistent with the organization’s mission, vision, values, and service standards. The role facilitates patients’ entrance into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, personal connection, attention to detail, and knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and applicable federal, state, and accreditation requirements. The work affects patient safety, reimbursement, and denial prevention through accurate patient identification, demographic and insurance data collection, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection. The position performs hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems. It verifies insurance, scans and retrieves documents, validates that orders are complete and signed by the ordering provider, and confirms the correct test is ordered. The representative communicates preparation instructions, financial responsibilities, and applicable payment requirements to patients. The role requires understanding and applying Medicare Secondary Payer requirements, HIPAA Privacy Standards, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. It involves independent judgment to address complex issues, professional and patient-focused communication with patients, families, and coworkers in person and by phone, and consistent achievement of quality standards. The representative may mentor less-skilled employees. BJC identifies this as a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices. The stated schedule is Monday through Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with a weekend rotation.
