This role is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for patient medical records used by the entire healthcare team. It plays a crucial role in preventing duplicate medical records, which can lead to safety and billing issues. The position ensures patient safety by verifying patient identity using identifiers, in compliance with organizational mandates. Responsibilities include checking in and registering patients, collecting and verifying demographic, guarantor, and insurance information, and discussing and collecting co-pays and other patient out-of-pocket expenses. Accurate registration information is vital for timely payment and preventing billing problems. The role also involves maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, understanding insurance basics, recognizing different plan types, and knowing which plans Advocate Health contracts with. Financial discussions with patients, referring them to Financial Advocates when necessary, and ensuring compliance with government regulations (HIPAA, EMTALA, etc.) are key aspects. The role may also involve scheduling appointments, coordinating cancellations and reschedules, and providing detailed information about test preparations and facility directions. A welcoming and professional environment is maintained through exceptional customer service, greeting patients and visitors, answering telephones, and offering various forms of assistance. The position requires monitoring and working assigned electronic health record work queues according to departmental processes.
