About The Position

As a Pathology Technician, you will be responsible for reconciling cytology specimens, ensuring proper testing is performed. You will accurately open, label, number, and verify patient identity for each specimen received, entering requisition information into the computer system. The role involves providing instructions on proper specimen collection, handling sub-optimal specimens according to established procedures, and preparing smears, cytospins, and cell blocks. You will also enter gross descriptions in EPIC, process various cytology specimens using the ThinPrep Pap test technique, and operate the ThinPrep Processor. Key duties include performing Papanicolaou stain, differential stain, and modified rapid Pap stain, as well as preparing specimens for special stains and performing slide coverslipping and labeling. You will assist with the maintenance of stains, reagents, and instruments, maintain daily, weekly, and monthly logs, and utilize and troubleshoot ThinPrep instrumentation and other laboratory equipment. Safe disposal of hazardous waste, processing specimens for send-out testing, filing blocks and slides, and managing supply inventory are also part of the responsibilities. Maintaining open communication with supervisors and directors, assisting in maintaining lab standards according to CAP guidelines, and performing other duties as assigned are expected. You may also assist in other areas of the department (Histology/Cytology) during downtime.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma

  • 2-year or 4-year degree in biology, chemistry, or medical technology.
  • 1-year work experience in hospital pathology lab in cytology, histology, and/or gross room.

Responsibilities

  • Reconciles cytology specimens to ensure proper testing is performed.
  • Accurately opens, labels, numbers, verifies patient identity and enters information from the test requisition into the computer system for each specimen received.
  • Provides instruction as needed on proper specimen collection methods.
  • Follows established procedures for handling sub-optimal specimens.
  • Prepares smears, cytospins and cell blocks.
  • Accurately enters gross description in EPIC.
  • Processes cytology specimens including fine needle aspirations, non-gynecological smears, and gynecological monolayers using ThinPrep Pap test technique.
  • Properly operates the ThinPrep Processor.
  • Performs all staining protocols: Papanicolaou stain, differential stain, and modified rapid Pap stain.
  • Prepares specimens for all types of special stains.
  • Slide coverslipping and labeling.
  • Provides assistance with the maintenance of all stains, reagents, and instruments of the laboratory.
  • Maintains all daily, weekly, and monthly logs.
  • Utilizing, and troubleshooting all equipment; ThinPrep instrumentation and all other laboratory centrifuges and instruments.
  • Safely disposes of hazardous waste according to procedure.
  • Processes specimens for send-out testing and consults.
  • Files blocks and slides.
  • Supply inventory management and ordering.
  • Maintains open communication with the department supervisor, MD directors and co-workers, particularly as it relates to important testing information.
  • Assist and maintain lab standards according to CAP guidelines.
  • Assists in other areas of the department (Histology/Cytology) during downtime.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
