As a Pathology Technician, you will be responsible for reconciling cytology specimens to ensure proper testing is performed. You will accurately open, label, number, and verify patient identity, entering information from the test requisition into the computer system for each specimen received. This role involves providing instructions on proper specimen collection methods, handling sub-optimal specimens according to established procedures, and preparing smears, cytospins, and cell blocks. You will accurately enter gross descriptions in EPIC, process cytology specimens including fine needle aspirations, non-gynecological smears, and gynecological monolayers using the ThinPrep Pap test technique, and operate the ThinPrep Processor. Additionally, you will perform all staining protocols (Papanicolaou stain, differential stain, and modified rapid Pap stain), prepare specimens for special stains, and perform slide coverslipping and labeling. This position also assists with the maintenance of all stains, reagents, and instruments, maintains daily, weekly, and monthly logs, and utilizes and troubleshoots ThinPrep instrumentation and other laboratory centrifuges and instruments. You will safely dispose of hazardous waste, process specimens for send-out testing and consults, file blocks and slides, and manage supply inventory and ordering. Maintaining open communication with the department supervisor, MD directors, and co-workers regarding important testing information is crucial. You will also assist in maintaining lab standards according to CAP guidelines, assist in other areas of the department (Histology/Cytology) during downtime, and perform other duties as assigned.
