Under the supervision of the department manager, this role performs a variety of tasks to support pathologists and other allied healthcare providers. The specialist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of all documents, tests ordered, and patient case reports, allowing pathologists to focus on patient care. Key tasks include transcribing pathology reports, research, and administrative documents, as well as coordinating patient case correspondence for consultations. The role also involves ordering tests and stains, answering phones, assisting callers with patient reports, adding stains to cases, changing patient demographics, providing follow-through, participating in process improvement initiatives (including data collection), coordinating case conference materials, and maintaining the consultant calendar. The specialist is required to follow work unit standard operating procedures, review them for accuracy, and serve as a resource and mentor by training, educating, and mentoring new and existing team members, as well as troubleshooting and resolving problems.
