About The Position

Aird & Berlis LLP is seeking to fill a new open vacancy for a Patent Agent with a background in physics or engineering (engineering science/physics, biomedical, mechatronic or electrical/computer) to support a growing direct patent practice. We are looking for a candidate who is eager to work directly with startup, scale-up, and university clients to build high-value patent portfolios and develop IP strategy from the ground up. The successful candidate will work closely with several partners in the firm who specialize in medtech, robotics, space, photonics, quantum, AI, software, and other deeptech fields. The ideal candidate will play a key role in shaping client IP strategies while building strong relationships within Canada’s innovation ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in: Engineering science / Engineering Physics, Physics Biomedical, Mechatronic, or Electrical/Computer Engineering
  • Registered Canadian Patent Agent
  • Microsoft 365 suite of applications
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to clearly explain complex technical concepts
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications across a range of advanced technology sectors
  • Contribute to a growing direct patent practice
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Support clients in aligning IP strategy with business and commercialization goals
  • Progress toward serving as a primary client contact
  • Provide guidance on IP strategy to founders, startups, and university technology transfer offices
  • Support clients in developing and managing valuable patent portfolios
  • Engage with the Canadian entrepreneurial ecosystem
  • Contribute to the growth and visibility of the firm’s patent practice
  • Handle daily administrative details
