About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is a robotics research and deployment company that is innovating across the full robotics stack, including hardware, software systems, applications, and machine learning. The company is experiencing rapid growth in patentable inventions and is seeking its first in-house patent engineer to manage its patent portfolio. The company's mission is to build general-purpose, intelligent robots that will operate in various environments, from factories to homes, by ensuring research and deployment work in tandem. Requirements

2+ years of experience drafting patent applications in robotics, mechatronics, controls, computer vision, or machine learning.
A body of patent applications personally drafted.
BS or MS in mechanical engineering, EE, CS, or robotics.
Sufficient technical depth to read company code, understand systems, and identify novel aspects.
Ability to extract invention disclosures from engineers efficiently.
Precise technical writing skills.
Judgment to differentiate between patentable inventions, trade secrets, and unprotectable ideas.
Ability to operate with autonomy and conviction.

Nice To Haves

Experience at a hardware or robotics startup with an evolving patent portfolio.
Experience managing outside IP firms regarding scope, quality, and cost.

Responsibilities

Identify patentable inventions from engineering developments and ensure timely filings.
Draft patent applications, including claims, specifications, and figures.
Manage the patent portfolio, including deadlines, fees, and outside counsel spend.
Respond to outside IP questions from diligence, customers, and partners.
Collaborate with founders and leadership on patent strategy, including decisions on what, when, and how to file.
