About The Position

Ivy Tech is seeking a motivated and skilled Part-Time Life Sciences Tutor to support students in life science courses and related disciplines. This position involves providing in-person and virtual tutoring in a welcoming, inclusive environment that fosters academic growth. The role includes 1-on-1 tutoring in life sciences courses, leading group tutoring and study sessions, exam review, and TEAS bootcamp. An ideal candidate will have experience with life science education at the high-school and early college level, strong customer service skills and a passion for helping students succeed. TRIO Student Support Services at Ivy Tech Indianapolis is searching for a part-time tutor in Life Sciences. TRIO SSS is a federally funded program that serves students who are low income, first generation and/or have documented disabilities, to help them persist and succeed in completing their degree. This position is limited to 10 hours per week for 30 weeks during the 2026–2027 academic year. Availability may include in-person, virtual, and weekend hours based on program and student needs.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in life science subjects, e.g. Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry
  • Ability to quickly identify key student concerns and prioritize subject issues
  • Ability to guide students through complex concepts with patience and clarity
  • Willingness to dig beneath surface-level questions to address root challenges
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with a diverse student population
  • Capable of maintaining a professional and supportive tone as well as a positive, growth-oriented mindset in all settings
  • Maintain an inclusive, clean, and student-friendly environment
  • Promote respect and collaboration among students
  • Comfortable using Windows PCs, MacBooks, and Chromebooks
  • Familiar with learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard), Microsoft and Google Suites, Zoom, email, and chat tools
  • Accurately track tutoring sessions for outcome reporting
  • Adhere to academic and privacy standards, including FERPA compliance
  • Strong background in Biology, Anatomy, Medicine, or a related field
  • Must demonstrate ability to promote an environment that reflects the broad backgrounds represented by our students and employees and which every individual feels respected and valued.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional knowledge in nursing-related coursework, mathematics coursework, and physical sciences is a plus
  • Experience with virtual instruction tools (Zoom, screen sharing, writing tablet usage) preferred
  • Prior tutoring or teaching experience at secondary or post-secondary levels preferred

Responsibilities

  • Use established Math and Science Center pedagogy and protocols to tutor students one-on-one in life science courses and science-related courses.
  • Thoroughly document tutoring data.
  • Sustain high-quality customer service while facilitating back-to-back tutoring sessions.
  • Apply advanced problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve student questions and inquiries.
