About The Position

Assist with operating and maintaining equipment in the engineering laboratories facilities that support instruction in the Engineering Technology/Engineering Science Department. This includes all of the laboratories that support instruction in the department with specific focus on the Materials Testing Laboratory, Computer-Aided Drafting Laboratories, Prototyping Laboratory, 3D Printing Laboratory, and Physics Laboratories. Provide support for operating and maintaining equipment/machinery, mechanical setup and repairs, and all instructional equipment used in all department supported curriculum. Assist students and professors in the laboratory as necessary. Supervise and train student aides in the work-study program.

Requirements

  • AAS degree in Mechanical Technology or General Engineering preferred.
  • Machining skills and technical proficiency in the use of subtractive (vertical milling machines and lathes, etc.) and additive manufacturing (3D printers) is a must for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of destructive and non-destructive testing of metals and polymers a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of the Mechanical Engineering Technology and Physics Laboratories. Fabricate and repair equipment for other areas of the college, as needed: a. Regular maintenance, minor repair and modification of existing equipment. Maintenance of tools and tooling. Scheduling of needed service and repair calls. Assist in installing or rearranging equipment.
  • b. Conduct inventories of capital equipment or supplies. Develop projections of supply needs and research vendor prices. Prepare purchase requisition information for approval. Receive, inspect, and store incoming supplies in an orderly manner.
  • c. Construct and machine specially designed items needed for operating the laboratories and laboratory equipment.
  • Security and Safety: a. Assist students in the safe operation of equipment.
  • b. Oversee the security of expensive tools and equipment, including lock-up.
  • c. Maintain neat and orderly laboratory premises.
  • d. Maintain all of the necessary documentation for compliance with "Right-to-Know" requirements.
  • Assist in Laboratory Operation: a. Prepare and set up equipment for laboratory experiments in consultation with faculty.
  • b. Assist in disseminating laboratory materials to students maintaining accountability.
  • c. Assist faculty by working with individual students and groups of students during set up and operation of equipment. A focus on safety and concern for possible damage to equipment is of particular importance.
  • Prepare annual physical inventory of tagged equipment and chemical and hazardous waste. Compliance with New Jersey State requirement of records.
  • Supervision of student aides.
  • Other duties as assigned by department chairperson or division dean.
