Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Social work, Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Education or a related discipline from an accredited program.
  • Registration with a recognized regulatory college/body in good standing; under the Regulated Health Professions Act able to perform the Controlled Act of Psychotherapy.
  • Superb judgement, interpersonal and time management skills required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to putting the student experience first.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including students, faculty, support staff, administrators and community stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the Ontario college system.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years relevant experience working with students in a post-secondary environment.
  • Experience working with psychological assessments is an asset in order to understand the differential diagnosis of LD and AD/HD and mental health diagnoses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing development of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging competencies as well as wholistic, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing practices within a counselling environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides individual counselling support through the Access and Support Centre (ASC) to support students with disabilities/exceptionalities, mental health, personal and academic/vocational concerns.
  • Conducts assessments, utilizing screening tools to screen students with suspected learning disabilities, ADHD, ASD and emerging mental health concerns.
  • Implements short-term counselling and psychotherapeutic interventions while maintaining clinical records in accordance with relevant legal and privacy standards.
  • Reviews and interprets individual psycho-educational assessment reports or medical documentation in order to identify processing strengths and weaknesses and academic impacts.
  • Assists students with learning disabilities to identify and develop compensatory strategies and tools needed to reduce functional impacts in the academic environment and promote academic success.
  • Supports students in understanding their functional limitations and how it impacts their learning in order to promote self-awareness, self-advocacy skills.
  • Offers evidence-based, brief therapeutic interventions from various modalities such as CBT and Solution Focused Therapy.
  • Administers screening tools, conducts assessments, including risk assessments in order to make appropriate recommendations for support, treatment and referrals.
  • Develops, communicates and assists in the implementation of individual learning strategies support, in order to develop the student’s general academic and metacognitive skills.
  • Provides consultation to ASC staff and to faculty on individual student needs, relating to accessibility.
