About The Position

The Mustard Seed is seeking a motivated, experienced, adaptable, and client-centred Clinical Counsellor to join our Health & Wellness team. This position is dedicated to supporting residents at The Mustard Seed's housing sites as well as other TMS clients who are experiencing mental health challenges, substance use concerns, or concurrent disorders. The Clinical Counsellor will provide comprehensive clinical assessments, individual and group counselling, and evidence-informed therapeutic interventions tailored to each client's unique needs. The successful candidate will work closely with internal departments and external community partners to ensure coordinated, holistic care and positive client outcomes. The Clinical Counsellor will work closely with the Health & Wellness and Affordable Housing teams to empower clients on their journey toward recovery, stability, and improved well-being.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in counselling psychology or social work; active or eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), or Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) with a clinical designation, or an equivalent regulatory body, either provisionally or fully.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and treatment; substance abuse and addictions treatment psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects); psychotherapeutic and counselling skills, with particular emphasis on evidence-based interventions with trauma and attachment disruption in populations who experience historical oppression.
  • Understanding of vulnerable populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness, and 1-2 years’ experience working in the field.
  • Familiarity with legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to the clientele.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed with a demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that requires flexibility and balancing of competing priorities.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills, including ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Strong relationship building and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interprofessional team.
  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, time management and organizational skills with high attention to details.
  • Proficient with computers and technology; EMR experience preferred.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive case management and clinical counselling services to clients, including intake, assessment, care planning, case conferencing, ongoing monitoring, crisis intervention, safety and recovery planning, referrals, follow-up, and evaluation of client progress.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client documentation, including case notes, assessments, progress reports, critical incident reports, consent and release of information forms, and other records required for accountability, accreditation, and legislative compliance.
  • Coordinate and facilitate case consultations with multidisciplinary team members and community partners to support comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, risk management, and coordinated client care.
  • Provide evidence-informed counselling services using trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and client-centred approaches.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment and wellness plans that support clients in achieving their goals related to mental health, recovery, housing stability, and overall well-being.
  • Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal departments, including Health & Wellness, Affordable Housing, Community Impact Centres, and Shelter Services, as well as with external service providers and community agencies to ensure coordinated care.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, contributing to a collaborative, inclusive and supportive team environment.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and clinical support to practicum students as appropriate.
  • Comply with all organizational policies, professional standards, and Health & Safety requirements, including promptly reporting incidents, hazards, and near misses in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
