About The Position

Under either immediate or general supervision, the Parks Worker II performs a variety of gardening and maintenance tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park facilities, and performs other related duties as assigned. This is the journey level class in the Parks Worker series. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or, when filled from the outside, require prior park maintenance experience. Appointment to the II level requires that the employee be performing the full range of duties for the class and meet the qualification standards for the class. A Parks Worker II is expected to perform assigned duties with only occasional instruction or assistance and work is normally reviewed only on completion. Adequate performance at this level requires the knowledge of general park maintenance, repair and construction as well as a knowledge of applicable Department policies and procedures.

Requirements

Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Park Maintenance Worker I in the City of Alhambra, and formal or informal training which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Working knowledge of basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work, and safe work practices.
Ability to learn to use the hand and light power tools required in general park maintenance work
Ability to perform heavy manual labor
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class "C" Driver's License is required.

Responsibilities

Waters, mows, weeds, trims, renovates, and fertilizes grass
Spades and otherwise prepares ground around plants and shrubs, including mixing and applying fertilizers
Plants trees, flowers, and shrubs
Rakes leaves, clean walks, fields, courts, and other facilities
Picks up rubbish and paper and performs general grounds cleaning
Loads rubbish and trimmings on trucks
Performs routine cleaning and semi-skilled maintenance in park buildings including carpentry, plumbing, and other trades
Operates large power gang mowers, sweepers, edgers, tractors, and various park maintenance equipment
Assists in tree trimming acting as ground helper
Operates chipper, stump grinders, and other related equipment
Applies herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers
Maintains tools and equipment
Performs other related duties as assigned
Maintains regular attendance
