About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking an Urban Forestry Planner Program Supervisor to perform responsible professional work under the general direction of the Urban Forestry Coordinator in the care of city trees in parks, along public rights-of-way and greenways. Performs program support through tree health assessments, communications with citizens, and work planning. This is an exempt position. SUMMARY Performs work that involves planning, organizing, promoting and developing a variety of City-wide or facility based recreational opportunities for area residents.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree from four-year college or university with a major in recreation, leisure services or related field
  • one to two years related experience and/or training in recreation and leisure services; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, risk management plans, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write reports and prepare correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of citizens or employees of organization.
  • Ability to serve as department's liaison with community groups.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions provided in written, or oral form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors degree from a four year college or university with major work in forestry, urban forestry, horticulture or related field
  • considerable arboricultural, landscape maintenance and natural resource management experience.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current International Society of Arborists Certified Arborist certification and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator's license in category 3, Ornamental and Turf Pest Control and Fertilizer Applicator permit.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of street trees, park trees, greenway trees, and other public tree assets to evaluate health, condition, risk, and maintenance needs.
  • Develop and implement urban forestry management plans that support the City's environmental, sustainability, and beautification goals.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a citywide tree inventory utilizing GIS and asset management systems.
  • Identify priorities for tree planting, pruning, removals, preservation, and risk mitigation.
  • Monitor canopy coverage trends and recommend strategies to increase urban tree canopy.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, supervises and evaluates part-time program staff
  • Evaluates programs and make recommendations regarding their continuation
  • Assists in the preparation of and makes recommendations regarding budgets; monitors expenditures and allocates funds.
  • Purchases materials and supplies as requested and/or required
  • Leads programs, activities or community events including summer programs; assists with the registration process
  • Provides for the safe operation of city vehicles (training staff, transporting participants, maintenance.
  • Conducts research and writes reports regarding recreational services
  • Serves on committees and maintains relationships with leaders in the community
  • Assists in preparation of part-time payroll
