About The Position

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the construction, operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of Tooele County Parks and Recreation grounds, facilities, sports fields, infrastructure, and equipment. Performs preventative and corrective maintenance; identifies and troubleshoots maintenance problems; completes assigned work orders and projects; operates vehicles and light-to-heavy equipment; and assists in preparing Parks and Recreation facilities for public use, programs, tournaments, special events, and other activities. Works as part of the Parks and Recreation maintenance team to ensure County parks, grounds, facilities, and associated infrastructure are safe, functional, attractive, and maintained to established department standards.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma.
  • Experience in parks maintenance, grounds maintenance, landscaping, sports field maintenance, irrigation, construction, facilities maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Working knowledge of parks, grounds, turf, irrigation, facility maintenance, general construction, equipment operation, preventative maintenance, and applicable safety practices.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power tools, vehicles, trailers, grounds-maintenance equipment, and light-to-heavy equipment; troubleshoot routine maintenance problems; understand and follow written and verbal instructions; maintain basic electronic records; work independently; adapt to changing assignments and priorities; and work effectively with employees, contractors, and members of the public.
  • Must demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, dependability, and the ability to recognize and respond appropriately to unsafe conditions.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must complete required OSHA, hazardous-material, confined-space, and other department-required safety training within established timeframes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in parks maintenance, grounds maintenance, landscaping, sports field maintenance, irrigation, construction, facilities maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and improvement of Tooele County Parks and Recreation grounds, sports fields, facilities, and infrastructure.
  • Maintains turf, landscaped areas, trees, natural and artificial sports fields, baseball/softball infields, irrigation systems, roads, parking areas, RV areas, fencing, signs, and other park amenities.
  • Performs general construction and repair involving irrigation, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, concrete, steel, fencing, and other building or site systems within the employee's training and authorization.
  • Safely operates and maintains vehicles, tractors, commercial mowing equipment, utility vehicles, skid steers, loaders, trailers, snow-removal equipment, turf and sports-field equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other light-to-heavy equipment.
  • Performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs of facilities, equipment, vehicles, irrigation systems, and park infrastructure. Identifies and corrects or reports safety hazards and maintenance deficiencies.
  • Prepares and maintains parks, athletic fields, facilities, and equipment for leagues, tournaments, rentals, special events, and other activities. Assists with event setup, teardown, facility operations, and securing facilities as assigned.
  • Performs snow and ice removal and responds to weather-related, emergency, and after-hours maintenance needs.
  • Maintains required maintenance, inspection, equipment, chemical, and work records and uses County computer or electronic work-order systems as assigned.
  • Follows County and department safety policies and uses required personal protective equipment. Assures reasonable precautions are taken to protect employees and the public during maintenance, construction, and equipment operations.
  • Works cooperatively with all Parks and Recreation divisions and assists other work groups, facilities, projects, and operations as assigned.
  • May be required to work variable schedules, evenings, weekends, holidays, rotating on-call assignments, and extended or emergency hours based on operational needs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
