About The Position

Help keep Hillsboro’s parks and sports fields safe, welcoming, and ready for the community. As a Parks Maintenance Worker assigned to the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex, you’ll perform hands-on maintenance of turf, grounds, irrigation systems, facilities, and park equipment while helping create spaces where residents can play, gather, and enjoy the outdoors. The City of Hillsboro’s parks and recreation team helps maintain vibrant, safe, and accessible spaces for residents and visitors. This role contributes directly to the quality and appearance of the City’s parks and sports facilities. This position performs a variety of maintenance and repair duties in an outdoor environment at Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. Staff at GFRC maintain the award-winning facility and support hundreds of events each year. You’ll work independently and as part of a team while interacting with coworkers, community members, customers, and event participants.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform maintenance and repair work related to the assigned functional area.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and maintenance equipment safely.
  • Ability to work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and initiative when completing assigned work.
  • Ability to work safely across a variety of terrains and weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and keep others informed about work progress and potential problems.
  • Commitment to maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming community spaces.
  • Some maintenance and repair experience specific to the functional area of assignment; OR Any combination of experience and training that provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Valid State Driver’s License and safe driving record.
  • Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain sports fields, turf, landscaped areas, grounds, equipment, and facilities.
  • Mow, trim, edge, fertilize, and water turf and landscaped areas.
  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation equipment and systems.
  • Assist with pesticide applications to turf and landscaped areas.
  • Operate and maintain mowers, tractors, trucks, loaders, backhoes, brush chippers, and other equipment.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Maintain restrooms, park structures, and other facilities, including minor repairs and painting.
  • Help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming parks by removing trash, graffiti, and other hazards.
  • Support events by opening and closing facilities and helping ensure park rules are followed.
  • Communicate work progress, problems, and improvement ideas with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Respond courteously and promptly to questions and comments from community members.
  • Maintain accurate records and complete required training and meetings.
  • Perform other directly related duties consistent with the role.
