Work includes landscape care, facility upkeep, minor construction and repair, irrigation system maintenance, janitorial services, and support for City events. Requirements

  • Ability to install, maintain and repair pipes, controllers, valves and heads in irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of work hazards and proper safety procedures.
  • Care of tools and skill in the operation of parks equipment such as rototiller, backhoe, excavator, aerial bucket trucks, brush truck, brush chippers, stump grinders and chainsaws.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain Washington State commercial driver’s license (“CDL”) within two years of employment and maintain CDL requirements for the duration of their employment.
  • Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • Knowledge of the application and use of herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and skills used in turf and plant maintenance including planting, pruning and fertilizing plants, trees and shrubs common to the Washington area and irrigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of custodial materials and the application of those materials for cleaning public facilities, buildings and mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the hazards of tree maintenance work.
  • Ability to ensure safety conditions, equipment and procedures for assigned personnel and to work safely without presenting a direct threat to others.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Ability to learn and implement city procedures, regulations and requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and individuals, including appointed officials, vendors, contractors, city staff and the general public.
  • May interact and communicate with contractors and vendors to make repairs and support contracted work.
  • Ability to effectively use oral and written communication in the performance of duties.
  • The ability to complete assigned work orders, document maintenance activities, reports deficiencies, and communicate needed repairs or safety concerns to the supervisor VIA Phone, ipad, or computer.
  • Working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of specialized maintenance tools.
  • Ability to coordinate various activities and projects with changing priorities.
  • May shift schedule to provide maintenance and logistical support for City events, athletic use, and community activities, including setup, cleanup, waste removal, restroom service, field preparation, and related site support
  • Ability to make effective use of time (time management).
  • Ability to develop and sustain positive working relationships with all city staff.
  • Ability to respond to the public, in general, in a courteous manner.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Relates to various personality styles in a calm manner.
  • Ability to be available and respond to 24-hour on-call for emergency situations when required.
  • Two years experience in park maintenance operations or experience in a related field that provides the required skills and knowledge.
  • Must be available for overtime and for weekends and/or occasional holidays.
  • Must be able to work varying schedules as assigned.
  • Positions require the use of City vehicles on City business.
  • Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record in accordance with City insurance requirements.
  • Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and obtain/maintain certificates necessary for functional skills performance, maintenance and improvement as follows: Washington State commercial driver license within two years of date of hire; Pesticide/herbicide applicators license within one year of date of hire; Certified playground inspector and other certifications or licenses as deemed necessary by the Parks Director.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the care, maintenance and repair of park buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain riding and walk behind lawn mowers, blowers, power trimmers, chainsaws and other power tools necessary to maintain the city's parks and municipal grounds.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, saws, picks, axes, and hoes necessary in parks maintenance activities.
  • Mixes and works with cleaning fluids, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using normal and specialized protective equipment.
  • Maintain facilities in city parks, including cleaning, minor repair activities and janitorial services.
  • Minor repair activities may include basic carpentry, concrete, electrical, mechanical and plumbing work.
  • Empty trash receptacles at the city park facilities and in the downtown commercial area and transport to disposal site.
  • May clean up unpermitted camps within the parks.
  • May perform daily maintenance and repair of athletic fields.
  • May operate motor vehicles such as pick-up, tractors, and 3/4-ton flatbed with trailer.
  • Plant, replant, prune, fertilize and maintain plantings.
  • Mow, fertilize, weed, etc. lawn areas.
  • Recognize that you provide essential services and that you represent the City of Monroe when dealing with the general public.
  • Be polite, courteous, and cooperative when interacting with the internal and external customers of the City of Monroe.
  • Report to work ready to perform your job effectively and efficiently.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.

  • Perform all job duties within the standards set forth for your position and notify your manager when backlogs or unexpected work may result in a delay in completing essential tasks.
  • May perform maintenance on underground irrigation systems.
  • Irrigation using hose and sprinklers for ground areas that are not equipped with underground irrigation systems.
  • Open/Close parks.
  • May inspect and maintain city playgrounds and equipment.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, log and maintain maintenance records as assigned and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
