About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey level semi-skilled and manual labor tasks in the maintenance of parks, grounds, irrigation systems and public recreational areas. This is the journey level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series, performing more highly skilled maintenance duties than the entry level Parks Maintenance Worker I. Work is performed under general supervision and this classification is distinguished from the higher level Parks Maintenance Leadworker by the absence of supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent; AND two (2) years of grounds and irrigation systems maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies and procedures and standards.
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping, landscaping and irrigation systems maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of State and federal environmental protection codes and regulations; Cal OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of common hand and power tools.
  • Skill in using and operating hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and heavy duty construction equipment required to work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Skill in operating bobcats and five-gang mower.
  • Skill in performing basic carpentry, electrical and welding duties.
  • Skill in reading engineering drawings or blueprints.
  • Skill in identifying unsafe conditions and taking corrective action.
  • Skill in troubleshooting and assessing problems and determining most effective method of repair.
  • Skill in human relations and communicating effectively with customers.
  • Skill in verbal and written communications.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Responsibilities

  • Determines type and quantities of materials required to perform and complete job assignments and arranges for timely delivery to job sites.
  • Inspects parks grounds, athletic fields, and buildings to determine need for repairs or preventative maintenance.
  • Inspects playground equipment to determine compliance with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) Standards and other safety codes. Repairs equipment, as required.
  • Mows grass with lawn mower, edges roadways, sidewalks, curbs, around trees; pulls and removes weeds from flower beds, trims trees, hedges at various heights, and removes exotic trees and vegetation from natural areas.
  • Performs minor repairs to parks buildings such as painting, caulking, repairing drywall, installing drop ceilings and rewiring lighting fixtures. Paints and repairs park entry signs.
  • Locates, excavates and repairs or replaces damaged or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Maintains athletic fields (grass and clay) to include lining, mowing, fertilizing, watering, packing mounds and repairing sod.
  • Installs and maintains irrigation water systems.
  • Operates trucks and construction and maintenance equipment as necessary to complete work projects; checks equipment for proper servicing, operation and safety and reports defects to supervisor; maintains inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Delivers and sets up equipment for special events.
  • Maintains maintenance and repair records; may input and recall information into a computer terminal.
  • Responds to questions from the public regarding field or parks condition and status of repairs.
  • Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices; supports and actively participates in the City’s safety programs.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
