About The Position

The Parks Maintenance Technician performs maintenance tasks with lead worker supervisory responsibilities under the supervision of the Parks Manager. This role provides responsive, courteous, and efficient service to County residents and the general public. The duties include a variety of on-site work, both hand work and operation of heavy equipment, associated with the development, maintenance, and repair of Park infrastructure, Tower sites, boat landings, and game habitat structures. This position involves major maintenance and repairs to structures and facilities in County parks, as well as the development of new facilities, including the construction of smaller wood frame buildings, boat landings, pavilions, beaches, and small concrete flat work projects. The technician will also assist park caretakers with opening and closing parks, minor maintenance activities, and perform minor repairs, service work, and diagnose equipment repair needs on Forest and Parks Department equipment and machinery. Additionally, the role involves constructing and installing signs and steel gates, completing repairs on existing ones, cutting and supplying firewood, and maintaining the Forest and Parks shop area. The technician may act as a working foreman over seasonal and temporary personnel, provide enforcement of County Park ordinances, and work on the construction of fences. Troubleshooting and maintenance tasks on electrical and plumbing distribution systems, irrigation systems, pumps, water treatment systems, bathrooms, and septic systems are also part of the responsibilities. The technician must safely operate all tools and equipment and satisfactorily complete all required safety training. Lead worker supervisory responsibilities include taking control of situations, dictating subordinate activities, instructing and training, providing information for performance evaluations, and assigning work. Community relations functions involve meeting with park users, providing information, and offering timely and friendly customer service.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Four (4) years construction, forestry, or small engine maintenance work required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years equipment operation (skid steer, back hoe, dump truck, loader, etc.).
  • A valid Class A CDL license within 120 days of employment required.
  • A cell phone is required.
  • Successfully pass a post-employment-offer DOT drug screen, physical exam and agility screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree in the construction field, forestry, or small engine maintenance technology desired.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance tasks with lead worker supervisory responsibilities.
  • Provide responsive, courteous, and efficient service to County residents and the general public.
  • Perform a variety of on-site work, including hand work and operation of heavy equipment, for park infrastructure, tower sites, boat landings, and game habitat structures.
  • Perform major maintenance and repairs to structures and facilities in County parks.
  • Develop new facilities, including construction of smaller wood frame buildings, boat landings, pavilions, beaches, and small concrete flat work projects.
  • Assist park caretakers in opening and closing parks and performing minor maintenance activities (painting, placement of signs, picnic tables, swimming buoys, etc.).
  • Perform minor repairs, service work, and diagnose equipment repair needs on Forest and Parks Department equipment and machinery (chain saws, hand tools, tractor, dump truck, skid steer, dozer, boom mower, back-hoe, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobile, boat, lawn tractors, trailers, aerators, etc.).
  • Assist with projects at the Government Center Campus as assigned.
  • Construct and install signs and steel gates, and complete repairs on existing ones.
  • Cut and supply firewood to the parks and deliver other supplies to parks as needed.
  • Maintain the Forest and Parks shop area at Cornell, and its contents.
  • Act as a working foreman over seasonal and temporary personnel when available.
  • Provide enforcement of County Park ordinances as legally allowed.
  • Work on the construction of fences as necessary between County and private land.
  • Complete troubleshooting and maintenance tasks on electrical and plumbing distribution systems, irrigation systems, pumps, water treatment systems, bathrooms, and septic systems.
  • Safely operate all tools and equipment, and satisfactorily complete all required safety training.
  • Take control of situations and dictate subordinate activities in a responsible manner.
  • Instruct and train in methods and procedures.
  • Provide information for performance evaluations and make recommendations regarding unsatisfactory employees.
