About The Position

This role is perfect for a skilled mechanic who enjoys hands-on work and takes pride in supporting public spaces. The Parks Maintenance Mechanic is responsible to perform a variety of skilled duties in the repair and maintenance of equipment in City parks, and a variety of building facilities and structures; to build, fabricate, repair and maintain buildings, grounds, playgrounds, picnic facilities and irrigations systems; and to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Principles of general construction, fabrication, hydraulics, and backflow testing and installation.
  • Tools, materials, equipment and procedures used in skilled park and golf course maintenance work.
  • Techniques of cement finishing, rough and finished carpentry, masonry, drywall and texture.
  • Techniques of metal fabrication, torch cutting and welding.
  • Techniques for installing, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing irrigation systems.
  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of general construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Practices of playground inspection, maintenance and safety.
  • Techniques for installing, maintaining and repairing pool equipment.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Design, fabricate, weld and install a variety of park related equipment.
  • Repair, install and maintain buildings, play apparatus, and sprinkler systems.
  • Safely use a variety of tools and equipment utilized in maintaining parks and buildings.
  • Perform safety checks on playground equipment; identify and correct any safety issues.
  • Estimate cost and time associated with projects.
  • Keep accurate reports.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Read basic blueprints and park irrigation plans.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Two years of semi-skilled maintenance experience in carpentry, concrete, masonry, metal work, welding, painting, and/or plumbing work.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalency supplemented by specialized training in one or more trades areas.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial California driver’s license with specific endorsements, as assigned, is required within 60 days of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • The extent of electrical work to be performed is to be limited to work with wiring beyond the disconnect and will not include any other electrical wiring.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review and prioritize work orders based on importance and safety concerns.
  • Troubleshoot, install, maintain and repair irrigation systems to include hydraulic valves, backflow prevention devices, booster pumps, automatic control clocks, water main and lateral lines, low voltage wiring, and sprinklers.
  • Inspect, repair and maintain a variety of park equipment including benches, playground equipment, bleachers, dugouts, backstops, reservation boards, electric score boards, basketball hoops, tennis courts, wind barriers and soccer posts.
  • Fabricate, build and weld pool fences and gates; repair and install pool equipment; conduct annual pool inspections.
  • Repair, weld and fabricate trailers, bar-b-cues, parking lot gates, ball field score boards, security gates, signs, and picnic facilities.
  • Perform general building maintenance including, but not limited to, replacement and repair of doors, door locks, window screens, windows, fixtures, roofing, and sky lights; perform rough and finished carpentry work on City facilities
  • Install basketball courts, score boards and repair backstops.
  • Repair restrooms including plumbing fixtures, potable water supply, toilets and vanity; install pipes and plumbing fixtures; clear clogged drains.
  • Mix concrete; prepare forms and pour foundations; remove unsafe concrete.
  • Alter, repair, and construct articles and structures of wood, metal, concrete and other materials; design, build and install shelves; cabinets and lockers.
  • Construct, alter and install walls and partitions.
  • Perform maintenance on heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems.
  • Complete forms, requisitions and work status reports.
  • Safely and effectively maintain and operate various pieces of equipment, including but not limited to, backhoe, trencher, front loader, dump truck, compressors, jack hammers, welder, cutting torch, and concrete saws.
  • Assemble, install, maintain and repair bus shelters, benches, trash cans and ordinance signs.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
