About The Position

This role involves routine unskilled light and heavy manual labor in parks and buildings, focusing on construction and maintenance activities. The position requires performing a variety of tasks of a light to moderately heavy nature necessary to properly maintain and operate public parks, playgrounds, and other facilities. Employees will utilize acquired skills in the use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment, trucks, and tractors for the maintenance of park facilities and grounds. Duties include removing, cleaning, adjusting, and lubricating mechanical equipment, assisting tradesmen in repair and construction projects, and ensuring the upkeep and efficient operation of tools and equipment. Instructions are received orally or in written form, with routine tasks performed independently and more difficult work supervised. Some roles may require crew leadership.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to labor and grounds maintenance work.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and truck/trailer combinations requiring a Class “B” CDL license.
  • Ability to operate power tools and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate tractors, rollers, loaders, forklifts, and other similar equipment.
  • Must be capable of lifting a minimum of twenty-five (25) pounds on a regular basis and fifty (50) pounds occasionally.
  • Must be capable of wearing and using routine safety equipment (vehicle safety belt, safety glasses, respirators, hard hats, etc.).
  • Ability to perform job tasks in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the County Parks system.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and proper use of grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to grounds maintenance work.
  • Must have the physical, developmental, and mental ability to perform job tasks, work efforts, responsibilities, and duties of the position.
  • Must be capable of wearing and using routine safety equipment (vehicle safety belts, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.).
  • Ability to understand, follow, and complete oral and written instructions and prepare simple written reports.
  • No experience needed (for Parks Maintenance Worker I).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment.
  • Six (6) months experience in park system maintenance or related field and have met the mandatory training requirements of a Parks Maintenance Worker I (for Parks Maintenance Worker II).
  • A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications (for Parks Maintenance Worker II).
  • Must have a minimum of an eighth-grade education and one (1) year experience in grounds maintenance or related work and have met the mandatory training requirements for Parks Maintenance Worker I (for Parks Caretaker I).
  • Must possess a valid Florida Class "B" CDL with air brake endorsement at the time of application (for Parks Caretaker I and II).
  • A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required license (for Parks Caretaker I).
  • Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in grounds and park maintenance or related work and have met the mandatory training requirements of a Parks Caretaker I (for Parks Caretaker II).
  • A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required licensure and certifications (for Parks Caretaker II).
  • Must have Trenching & Excavation Competent Person certification in accordance with current OSHA regulations (for Parks Caretaker II).
  • Must have a current Florida Ornamental and Turf Pest Control license (for Parks Caretaker II).
  • Successful completion of at least one safety/hazard recognition course as provided by the County OED division or equivalent training (for Parks Caretaker II).

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine unskilled light and heavy manual labor in parks and buildings.

  • Assist tradesmen in a variety of repair and construction projects.

  • Perform as a crew leader for subordinate staff (in some roles).
  • Clean and sanitize park buildings and restrooms.
  • Cut grass, pull weeds, rake, edge sidewalks, and trim hedges.
  • Dig holes and trenches, plant trees and plants.
  • Load and unload materials, remove litter, and clean vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate pick-up trucks, chain saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, and pressure washers.
  • Repair buildings, tables, and barbeque grills.
  • Apply fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides.
  • Install and repair chain link fence.
  • Assemble and repair bleachers, picnic tables, and other park furnishings.
  • Empty trash containers.
  • Assist in athletic field maintenance and irrigation repairs and installation.
  • Perform janitorial tasks.
  • Operate various types of power tools and small equipment.
  • Lay sod, plant trees/plants, fertilize, trim, edge, mow.
  • Straighten/install signs, dig, rake.
  • Install, repair, and maintain irrigation components.
  • Install and repair various types of playground equipment.
  • Construct, repair, install, and maintain bleachers, picnic tables, and benches.
  • Repair and construct athletic fields.
  • Operate power mowers, saws, edgers, concrete mixers, trenchers, forklifts, tractors with implements, loaders, dump trucks, and utility vehicles.
  • Load and transport debris, materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Wash, clean, lubricate, adjust, and provide routine maintenance for assigned equipment.
  • Prepare athletic fields for league and tournament use.
  • Assist in special event preparations.
  • Clean park restrooms, pavilions, and picnic facilities.
  • Remove litter and debris from park areas.
  • Operate heavy construction equipment on a temporary, emergency, or trainee basis.
  • Perform athletic field maintenance tasks such as chalking/painting lines, ball field layout, edging and leveling clay areas, installing bases, repairing/constructing pitchers mounds, and dragging clay areas.
  • Perform enhanced turf maintenance tasks such as application of fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Perform facility safety inspections and maintain perpetual inventory of onsite chemical storage.
  • Operate one-ton trucks, five-yard dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, ZTR mowers, reel mowers, and heavy-duty tractors with attachments.
  • Operate, repair, and install irrigation systems.
  • Assemble and repair all types of fencing.
  • Report for work as directed when a declaration of emergency has been declared.
