About The Position

This position is scheduled to receive a 5% salary adjustment in July 2026. The role involves patrolling assigned parking areas, either on foot or by vehicle, to enforce parking regulations and issue warnings or citations for illegal parking. The officer will also provide general information to the public and perform related duties as assigned. Key functions include enforcing the municipal code, directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic, educating the public on parking laws, issuing citations for violations such as time limits, tow-away zones, loading zones, and metered parking. The role requires using a vehicle for patrol and enforcement, making court appearances when necessary, reporting damaged traffic control equipment and hazards, maintaining records, preparing reports, and delivering/picking up police vehicles for service. Officers will operate a compact vehicle, mark parked vehicles to track time limits, identify illegally parked vehicles, and attach notices or issue citations. They will report irregular or hazardous circumstances via radio, explain regulations, maintain records of actions, and may direct traffic or assist with sobriety checkpoints. The job also includes filing parking tickets, fueling traffic division vehicles, and building positive working relationships with colleagues and the public through good customer service.

Requirements

  • One year of work experience in a field with extensive public contact
  • Training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade
  • A valid California Driver's License
  • Ability to learn traffic laws and ordinances
  • Ability to learn to operate a compact motorized vehicle
  • Ability to analyze situations and take effective courses of action
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificate (must be obtained within the first six months of hire)

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned parking area, on foot or by vehicle

  • Place identifying marks on parked vehicles and subsequently check for these marks
  • Identify illegally parked motor vehicles and attach a warning notice, issue a citation or impound the vehicle
  • Report any irregular or hazardous circumstances to the police station by radio
  • Explain parking regulations and provide information to the public
  • Make and keep records and reports of actions taken in the line of duty
  • Testify in court
  • May direct traffic, place signs, barricades and other equipment used in sobriety checkpoints
  • File parking tickets
  • Fuel vehicles used by the traffic division
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service
