About The Position

The Park Maintenance Worker I assists and performs maintenance of parks, open space facilities, and other maintained public areas with mowing, trimming, planting, fertilizing, spraying, digging, raking, irrigation maintenance and installation, etc. Acquired skills and experience necessary through training with advanced workers. Performs custodial and general maintenance services by keeping assigned areas clean, orderly, safe, and secure with established standards and adjusting individual assignments. Uses various types of power-driven machines and cleaning materials. Performs general maintenance to include minor repairs and preventive maintenance. Perform a variety of tasks in weed and litter control at designated County facilities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year experience in the area of ground-keeping and landscaping.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered for the above requirements.
  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Adherence to all County safety guidelines.
  • Complete all FEMA training(s) assigned to this position.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed in this position.
  • Complete required supervisor training, if applicable.
  • Understand and fully execute both oral and written instructions in English and to perform work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • If county employee, must not have been on a Sick Leave Corrective Action Plan for attendance issues within the last 12 months.
  • If county employee, must not have a disciplinary action or written reprimand within the last 12 months.
  • Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.
  • Must have the ability to ask questions of foreman listen to and follow verbal and written directions in English.
  • Must have the ability to communicate verbally with co-workers.
  • Must have the ability to apply knowledge of use of tools, equipment and materials in a safe manner in the performance of essential duties.
  • Must have the ability to stand and/or walk up to four (4) hours at one time, and up to eight (8) hours total per day.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally from ground to waist level.
  • Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds frequently from ground to shoulder level.
  • Must have the ability to bend at waist and twist/rotate waist if necessary for up to one-half of workday.
  • Must have the ability to crouch and kneel frequently.
  • Must have the ability to work with arms extended and bent for up to four (4) hours at one time, and seven and one-half (7.5) hours total per day.
  • Must have the ability to push/pull with arms with a force of up to 50 plus pounds.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders and work from ladders while trimming trees or shrubs.
  • Must have the ability to coordinate use of hands and eyes in performance of essential duties.

Responsibilities

  • Cares for established park grounds; performs a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, digging, sprinkler repair, fence repair, maintaining existing landscapes, painting, planting, pruning, weeding, aerating, trash removal and general upkeep of lawns and grounds
  • Assists in the groundwork of soil preparation, soil leveling, seeding, sod installation and weed control.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and supplies, cleans, and cares for basic tools and equipment.
  • Assists trade workers with and general facility maintenance.
  • Delivers and assembles tents, outdoor bleachers, stands and tables for special events.
  • Assists other park maintenance crews with thinning and chipping of trees, shrubs, flower beds and weeding.
  • Learns and is able to demonstrate working with and/or mixing of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and/or insecticides and applying them through sprays under the direction of the qualifying party.
  • Learns and is able to demonstrate the operation and performance of daily maintenance of a variety of ground maintenance equipment, vehicles, trailers, power driven tools and equipment utilized in the performance of duties.
  • May be required to drive work trucks to and from work sites after successful completion of Bernalillo County’s defensive driving course.
  • Adherence to safe work practices and procedures in adherence with appropriate regulations and standards.
  • Completion of weekly work sheets and preventive and corrective action work orders assigned by supervisor.
  • Follows standard operating procedures for the department.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned by the supervisor.
