About The Position

Performs semi-skilled work in the daily maintenance of the parks and recreation facilities, trails, and athletic and multi-use fields for the Town. An employee in this class participates in the maintenance of the Town’s parks and recreation facilities and equipment. Work requires the employee to perform long- and short-range planning of work to include a year-round program of turf maintenance for athletic fields; determining the priority of work; ensuring the work is performed in a safe and effective manner; and determining quality of work. Employees are also responsible for all horticultural activities associated with the department to include turf management, landscaping, and pesticide application. Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to self and others and are accountable for ensuring proper maintenance of public facilities. Work is performed under general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director and is evaluated on the basis of attaining performance objectives, quantity and quality of work, work safety, and responsiveness to requests or complaints. This position may hire as a level one (I) or level two (II) based on qualifications.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in parks, grounds, and facility maintenance and repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety standards associated with facility and parks maintenance and repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of athletic field layout and preparation.
  • Considerable knowledge of cleaning chemicals and pesticide application and ability to obtain necessary State license.
  • Working knowledge of liability concerns related to providing parks and recreation services.
  • Working knowledge of electrical and plumbing trades.
  • Working knowledge of horticultural design and installations.
  • Skill in the operation of heavy, medium, and light equipment and tools utilized in the work.
  • Ability to maintain fields to specific standards.
  • Ability to assign and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work and safety methods and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and subordinates.
  • Ability to use chemicals and pesticides properly and in accordance with State rules and regulations.
  • Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of 5 years experience in the area of grounds and facility maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain ornamental and turf pesticide applicator’s license within twelve months.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mowing, trimming, mulching, plant installations, seeding, fertilizing, and irrigation; prepares athletic fields for play including markings, goals, bases, fences, etc.; applies pesticides, fertilizers, and chooses plant materials; inspects and repairs playground equipment; cleans and winterizes comfort stations; winterizes irrigation systems.
  • Coordinates with athletics staff to ensure fields are ready for practices and games.
  • Oversees the work of seasonal and part-time workers.
  • Performs maintenance in the Community Center.
  • Inventories supplies and prepares requests for the purchase of materials; prepares cost and material estimates; compiles data for various administrative reports; prepares budget requests.
  • Orders supplies and chemicals for use on the grounds.
  • Participates in setting up various facilities, rooms, and equipment for various events; ensures that preparations are made and inspects for safety.
  • Performs semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry tasks to maintain and repair facilities and for small construction projects; performs maintenance and repair tasks for landscaping and turf management.
  • Inspects parks, playgrounds, and facilities for safety and maintains records.
  • Operates mowers, tractors, 3-wheelers, Gators, trucks, blowers, aerators, and related tools and equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and some repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
