About The Position

Supervises the care, maintenance, and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures through subordinate crews; and performs other duties as required. This class is distinguished by its responsibility for supervising the care, maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures in a designated district. The work involves the supervision over a work force which include equipment operators and park caretakers.

Requirements

  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years of experience in the care, maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of basic methods and tools used in the common buildings and construction trades.
  • Knowledge of methods of preparing soils and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and trees.
  • Knowledge of operations and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to plan, lay out, assign and review the work of others in the care, maintenance and repair work of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other facilities.
  • Ability to prepare estimates of costs for materials, equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationship with subordinates.
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public in a courteous manner and enforce applicable ordinances, rules and regulations.
  • Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and makes work assignments for the care, maintenance and repair of park grounds, buildings, equipment and other structures.
  • Trains and supervises a varied work force including equipment operators, park caretakers and other groundskeeping and support personnel.
  • Conducts periodic inspections to see that recreational areas are in proper condition.
  • Makes cost estimates of maintenance and repair work, including time and labor costs.
  • Coordinates the use of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides in consultation with the Horticulturist.
  • Oversees the maintenance and repair of pipelines and sprinkler systems.
  • Coordinates with the Construction/Maintenance Supervisor for simple electrical, plumbing, painting and carpentry work.
  • Prepares requisitions for materials, equipment and supplies.
  • Inspects park facilities and appurtenances for necessary repairs and sets priorities as appropriate.
  • Instructs subordinates in park maintenance and operations activities and the care for and the operation of power tools, equipment and hand tools.
  • Resolves minor grievances and complaints by subordinates and refers major personnel grievances to superiors.
  • Coordinates support for community volunteer projects and assists the general public in an projects and events.
  • Assists and reviews the work of private park contractors.
  • Coordinates the implementation and assignment of community service workers into the workforce.
  • Reviews, prepares and submits reports.
  • Maintains records of work activities.
  • Initiates and enforces safety regulations.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Performs any and all related duties as assigned.
