About The Position

Reporting to the Park Coordinator – Supervisory in the assigned Park, the Park Maintenance Officer facilitates and directly assists in park operations, assists in the development of park infrastructure; assists in the development of park operations plans and facilitates their implementation, including parks, campgrounds, trails, visitor and interpretive centres and heritage rivers; promotes stewardship and heritage appreciation through the delivery of a Parks and Special Places (P&SP) Programs in Nunavut. These activities will primarily include operations fieldwork. The position is responsible for supporting the Visitor Centre Services and Park Stewardship Program. These activities are guided by work plans created in consultation with the Park Coordinator – Supervisory. In supporting the protection and restoration of Nunavut’s natural and cultural heritage and promoting recreation opportunities in keeping with the Territorial Parks Act and Nunavut Agreement (NA)/Inuit Benefit Agreement (IIBAs), this position promotes the region’s parks and special places, visitor services facilities in other region managed by the Division. In recognition that parks and special places are public facilities, services and assets, this position assumes lead role with on-site operational projects; with direction from Park Coordinator – Supervisory advises contracting services and construction activities in the Region’s parks and special places. The Park Maintenance Officer perform work related activities for Nunavut Park’s maintenance programing, including construction, maintenance and repairs of park facilities and furnishings, staff work plans, reporting to Park Coordinator – Supervisory, trail conditions, site conditions, emergency response, and visitor comments/concerns; assist in supervision of casual/summer staff at in the assisted Park, in operations and maintenance activities; and contribute to the developing and monitoring of workplans to identify and achieve annual goals and objectives in support of divisional goals.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • One (1) year related experience
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with marine navigation
  • Navigational and land survival skills
  • Familiarity with drafting and interpreting operational construction drawings through the use of computer aided drafting software
  • Documentation and reporting experience related to site inspection processes
  • Interest in park planning, natural resources management, tourism, environmental and cultural education
  • Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages
  • Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut
  • Experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment
