About The Position

The Park Maintenance 1 position is an entry-level role focused on performing a variety of maintenance and landscaping tasks to ensure the safety and attractiveness of parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields. This full-time position operates on a year-round schedule of Sunday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with potential for occasional evening and off-day hours for events and emergencies. The role involves maintaining grounds, preparing and setting up athletic fields and special events, performing minor repairs, assisting with project work, and snow removal. The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated, safety-conscious, and capable of working independently.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid IL Driver’s License and a safe driving record.
  • Previous experience in a Parks department/capacity required; minimum of one year in a full-time Parks department role, preferred.
  • General to skilled knowledge in the use of hand and power tools as well as gasoline and electric powered equipment is highly desired.
  • Effective organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to shift tasks are essential.
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word) and Internet search abilities.
  • Must be in good physical condition to perform manual labor, stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must have manual dexterity and sufficient strength to lift and/or move 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and utilize technical manuals, drawings/diagrams, and technical instructions.
  • Able to effectively communicate with supervisors, other staff, and the public.
  • Possess good problem-solving skills.
  • Capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
  • Possess strong safety awareness and utilize sound judgment.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions including extreme heat, humidity, cold, wind, and snow.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified or capacity to receive within 3 months of hire.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical with drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the Glen Ellyn area is a plus.
  • Previous landscaping and/or grounds maintenance experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining the grounds at parks and facilities, including mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, watering, and trash collection.
  • Athletic field preparation and set-up.
  • Special event set-up and take-down.
  • Performing minor repairs to park elements and playground equipment.
  • Assisting with project work and preventative maintenance.
  • Snow removal of sidewalks and other areas.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Working additional hours during evenings and off-days for events and emergency situations as required.
