About The Position

The Park and Recreation Maintenance Worker II performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks to maintain and repair park facilities, buildings, athletic fields, playgrounds, and natural areas. This role requires working independently and collaboratively to ensure park amenities' safety, functionality, and aesthetics.

Requirements

• Perform routine inspections to identify leaks and damage and ensure proper irrigation system functions, maintenance, repair, and construction.
• Familiar with electrical components like wires, fuses, circuit breakers, switches, and outlets.
• Understanding proper grounding in electrical systems.
• Knowledge of lighting fixtures, including incandescent, fluorescent, and LED lights, and troubleshooting fixture malfunctions.
• Common facility and building repairs and replacements of fixtures, gaskets, leaky faucets, unclogging drains, toilets, and sinks.
• Basic custodial duties; sanitation
• Read and interpret basic maps, drawings, diagrams, and blueprints.
• Identify signs of leaks, such as damp floors, drips, or unusual water meter readings.
• Install, diagnose, and troubleshoot irrigation system malfunctions, following established protocols.
• Work with minimal supervision due to a thorough understanding of operational procedures and policies.
• Handle most situations independently, seeking occasional guidance from new or uncommon scenarios.
• Complete tasks without close oversight, with work reviewed for accuracy and policy adherence.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Operate various vehicles and stationary mechanical equipment safely and effectively in routine situations.
• Understand the operational characteristics of tools and equipment utilized in maintaining and renovating turf and field maintenance.
• A high school diploma or GED
• One year’s experience, which would ensure the candidates can use and operate tools and equipment used in grounds and building maintenance.
• Strong Communication skills are essential for this role.
• Effectively read, interpret, and apply information from various documents, including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to identify potential issues and articulate observations and plans orally and written with clear communication.
• General understanding and ability to use mobile devices and software.
• Basic math skills and the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry.
• Can identify and solve problems with clear steps and predictable outcomes using commonsense.
• Valid California Driver’s License and proof of vehicular insurance
• Current First Aid/CPR certification for infants, Children, and Adults is required. If you don’t currently hold this certification, you must obtain it within 60 days of the hire date.
• Use your hands: This includes handling, feeling, and manipulating objects, along with reaching with your hands and arms.
• Maintain various positions: You will be expected to sit, stand, walk, grab, pull & push objects, stoop, kneel, crouch down, or crawl.
• Lift and carry objects: Occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs. is required, with regular lifting of up to 50 lbs.
• Vision/Hearing: This includes close-up vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. The individual must be able to identify signs of distress in a variety of environments, using a combination of visual and auditory cues or alternative methods for awareness.
• Maintain balance: Climbing or balancing may be required for some tasks.

Nice To Haves

• Welding experience (aluminum, gas) is desirable but not necessary.
• Bilingual is a plus.
• Fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides certification (if applicable)
• Optional 9/80 work schedule after completion of probationary period.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance on park facilities, buildings, and structures, including welding, painting, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
• Repair and maintain playground equipment, sports equipment, benches, picnic tables, and other park amenities.
• Address minor plumbing issues (e.g., leaky faucets) and electrical problems (e.g., replacing light bulbs).
• Maintain and repair irrigation systems for park grounds.
• Conduct safety inspections of park facilities and identify potential hazards.
• Trim hedges and edge walkways and maintain flower beds.
• Remove weeds, litter, and debris from park grounds.
• Prune trees and shrubs as needed.
• Apply fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides according to safety guidelines.
• Clean and maintain restrooms, kitchens, offices, and meeting rooms.
• Vacuuming, sweeping, waxing, and polishing floors.
• Regularly collects trash and other rubbish for disposal from parks, facilities & buildings.
• Keep facilities stocked with necessary supplies.
• Operates vehicles(trucks) for transporting materials and equipment.
• Uses various tools and equipment for irrigation and construction tasks, such as: Welder, Trenches, Pipe cutters, Sprinkler head tools, Meters (backflows), Concrete cutter, finishing equipment, and breaking equipment. Basic hand tools, power tools, weeding, gardening, and lawn equipment.
• Responds to inquiries and concerns from park patrons regarding irrigation systems and other concerns.
• Identifies and resolves irrigation-related issues.
• Refers complex issues to the supervisor for further action.
• Follows established safety protocols for outdoor work.
• Utilizes appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPR) for assigned tasks.
• Participates in safety training programs.
• Maintains and documents repairs, parts used, and labor hours for maintenance work & accurately completes records of irrigation system maintenance activities utilizing computerized maintenance management systems.
• Assists with setting up or taking down various equipment for District special events.
• May adjust irrigation schedules to accommodate the needs of special events.
• Other duties may be assigned.

• 40 hours of sick time per year (90-day employment period required)
• Telephone stipend of $40 per month.
