About The Position

The Parent Support Worker will assist the Maternal Child Health Program by improving health outcomes for pregnant women and families with infants and young children, by focusing on culture, role-modeling and healthy teachings by linking community resources. This role requires workers to be organized, flexible and adaptable. The facility, LLRIBHS, promotes health in our communities for the wellbeing of all members by providing accessible, high quality health services and programs. Together with others, they work to build capacity and educate as they address both acute needs and the determinants of health. Working 7.5 - hour shifts (Overtime may be required), the Parent Support Worker will provide in-home support such as basic infant care, infant stimulation, fostering healthy child development, self-care and coping as a parent, offering hands-on approach to learning and supportive mentoring as a peer. They will advocate, refer and act as a liaison for families, and work closely with Health Care Professionals and the Public Health Nursing & Health Team to provide and deliver programs and services. This position is based out of the community of Sucker River and Grandmother’s Bay. The successful candidate will travel from La Ronge to outlying communities daily, a fleet vehicle will be provided, and hours of work will include travel time.

Requirements

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate (Combination of Education and experience may be considered)
  • Certified First Aide & CPR and Safe Food Handling Certificate required or willing to obtain
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently, be self-directed and demonstrate organizational skills
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • Growing Great Kids (GGK) Curriculum training is an asset or willing to obtain
  • Personal experience as a parent or caregiver of infants &/or young children, is an asset
  • The ability to speak/understand Cree a definite asset
  • Experience working with First Nations Communities is an asset

Responsibilities

  • In-home support, utilizing a strength-based model with families who have children between the ages of 0-6 years
  • Teach individuals and group about health promotion topics
  • Assist the Community Health Nurse to provide and deliver programs and services
  • Advocate, refer and act as a liaison for families
  • Work closely with other Health Care Professionals
  • Planning and delivering workshops, community education events
  • Developing of appropriate awareness materials
  • Administering the nutrition coupon program
