About The Position

Responsible for the safe and courteous operation of a public transit vehicle. This is a part-time position with shifts from Monday to Friday, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The role involves providing transportation for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, operating the vehicle safely and defensively, performing pre-trip inspections and basic maintenance, reporting mechanical issues, collecting fares, completing reports, and adhering to dispatch instructions and trip manifests. The operator is expected to maintain a professional demeanor, provide excellent customer service, and uphold passenger safety, sensitivity, and confidentiality standards.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of transit vehicles and their operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of use of two-way radios, mobility device lifts, ramps and securement.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of customer service and de-escalation.
  • Knowledge of City geography.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Knowledge of responsibilities under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
  • Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Learn and follow city traffic laws, rules and safe vehicle operating procedures.
  • Learn and follow Federal transit regulations.
  • General knowledge of city geography and the location of various businesses and agencies.
  • Work within the constraints of a time schedule.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Use independent judgment and foresight when assessing road conditions in poor weather.
  • Give and follow directions with precision.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive public inquiries and complaints.
  • 1 year experience in passenger transportation, human services, or related field.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transportation for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
  • Operate vehicle in a safe, smooth and defensive manner at all times; obey traffic regulations.
  • Fuel and prepare vehicle for daily service; thoroughly inspect; fill fluids; spot clean; wash vehicle as needed; and report damage.
  • Report mechanical concerns and service requirements to maintenance personnel.
  • Perform fare collection and complete daily reports.
  • Follow direction of dispatch, adhere to trip manifest, and use two-way radio in a professional manner.
  • Project positive image to the public and provide exceptional customer service while communicating with peers and the public.
  • Adhere to passenger safety, sensitivity, and confidentiality standards.
  • Respond to public complaints and questions in a professional manner.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
