About The Position

Paraprofessionals work in a high school setting, following established Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) to improve socially significant behaviors under the supervision of a Teacher and Building Principal/Special Education Director. This role involves incorporating educational objectives into daily activities, facilitating skill generalization and maintenance, communicating with parents, maintaining student records and materials, and assisting students individually or in groups with lesson assignments. The position requires ensuring student safety, helping to facilitate communication and social-emotional skills, and may involve assisting with toileting and lifting. Students may present with behavioral issues, medical conditions, elopement risks, aggression, and require de-escalation. Reliable and consistent attendance is essential, and other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE).
Exceptions to the RIDE approved program: Those hired before January 1, 1999; Those with certification as a TA in another state; Those with an associates degree or bachelors degree AND who have completed coursework or other training consistent with the teacher assistant program standards.
After obtaining a certificate for a RIDE approved Teacher Assistant Program, must meet one of the following: Successfully pass the ParaPro Assessment, OR Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education, OR Obtain an associates or higher degree.

Responsibilities

Incorporate specific educational objectives into the context of on-going activities, as appropriate.
Facilitate opportunities for generalization and maintenance of skills.
Communicate with students’ parents via communication log.
Maintain a student notebook in a neat and orderly manner.
Maintain student specific materials and reinforcers.
Schedule activities as directed.
Review progress on IEP goals.
Participate in writing students’ progress reports.
Update students’ guidelines.
Discuss assigned teaching area with classroom teacher to coordinate instructional efforts.
Plan, prepare, and develop various teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.
Present subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion, and supervised role playing.
Assist students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
May need assistance with toileting and lifting.
Help facilitate communication and social emotional skills.
Responsible for safety of students.
