About The Position

The Paraprofessional supports teachers in delivering an innovative, high-quality education program for Boston Public Schools students and helps create an educational environment centered on quality and continuity. This anticipated vacancy is at Hernandez Elementary, a Spanish/English dual-language school. Candidates must be bilingual and biliterate in Spanish. The position is expected to become vacant by November 1, 2026, but the current incumbent may rescind their retirement, leave, or resignation up to that date. Hiring will not be confirmed until the position is vacated; if it is not vacant by the start of the school year, the hire may begin as a Long-Term Substitute.

The role reports to the Principal/Head of School. School start and end times and school-day lengths vary. Some schools have an extended day under the Schedule A Expanded Learning Time agreement. Compensation is at the BTU Paraprofessional hourly rate; salary details are available on the BPS website by union and grade/step.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Forty-eight credit hours of college coursework, an associate's degree, or a passing score on either the ParaPro Assessment or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants.
• At least two years of experience working with young children.
• Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.
• Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish.

Nice To Haves

• Associate's or bachelor's degree.
• Certification as a teacher or a license as a social worker.
• Fluency in an official BPS language: Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.

Responsibilities

• Support direct instruction for children individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings.
• Assist with classroom activities.
• Prepare instructional materials.
• Assist with classroom setup and cleanup.
• Manage individual and classroom behavior using prescribed approaches.
• Supervise students during field trip activities.
• Perform other related duties as requested by the Head of School/Principal.
