About The Position

To assist and support students with educational needs and/or implementation of their Individualized Education Program under the direction and supervision of a General Education or Special Education Teachers. Paraprofessionals may be required to provide services in regular classrooms, ESL, special needs, side-by-side or other special education settings. All Paraprofessionals may have duties in playground supervision, lunchroom and lunch area supervision, lavatory supervision, bus area supervision, and in transportation of District students as required. Assist instructional supervisor in group and individual student assistance with curriculum work, special projects, language acquisition and other required special needs. Assist in maintaining control and order in the classroom and in duty areas. Assists the teacher with preparation of instructional materials. Assist in the preparation and maintenance of the classroom for student use. Assist in the closure of the classroom during periods when school is not in session. Perform assignments and duties as required to meet the personal care and non-medical health-related needs of students with special needs. Assist instructional supervisor with control and instruction on field trips and in other extra-curricular activities. Assist instructional supervisor in helping students in acquiring fluency in English. Provide activities which offer students additional opportunities to improve language, academic, and/or social skills. Monitor student activities at the duty stations and keep the students safe and well cared for. Consults frequently with the teacher about the needs, suggestions, questions, problems, and progress of the student. Submit reports to supervisors as needed regarding incidents requiring disciplinary action at any duty station or in the classroom. Move about as needed to observe activity and to maintain safety, order and control at all duty stations. Maintains adequate and legible records concerning his/her students work with teacher direction. Assist in all safety programs, drills and evacuation proceedings as required. Report to your instructional supervisor and/or school health center personnel all student medical and safety issues which you observe. Attend classes, in-services and seminars as needed to improve knowledge and skills and to keep current with the latest in services equipment, material and functions as it pertains to the District’s needs. Practice good public relations techniques with students, staff, administration and parents, demonstrating a cordial and friendly manner. Participate in the Medicaid Reimbursement program which includes maintaining monthly logs on eligible students; attending scheduled training. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must obtain and maintain a AZ DPS IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (required).
  • High School diploma or equivalent (required).
  • First Aid/CPR Certification and AED is required upon hire or obtain the certification within 30 day of employment (in-person hands on training/certificate, required).
  • Excellent communication skills (written or oral).
  • Experience working with school-age children.
  • Experience working with children with severe needs.
  • Professional development history which shows knowledge concerning students with severe needs.
  • Experience with working with students in various levels of instruction.
  • Computer skills in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel and student data systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret general documents such as employee handbooks and safety/training manuals.
  • Ability to write general correspondence and speak effectively with others.
  • Ability to interpret assortment of instructions furnished in variable forms.
  • Ability to apply reason to research and solve moderately complex issues with little or no assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to speak fluent Spanish (preferred)
  • Obtain and maintain certification in Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention (preferred).
  • Experience in a reading intervention classroom is a plus.
