About The Position

The Paramedic will collect and convey information regarding the health status of patients to the RN and physician throughout their visit in the Emergency Department. This role involves communicating patient information verbally and in writing to the RN for the development and modification of the patient’s care plan. The Paramedic will explain procedures and treatments to patients to gain cooperation and ease apprehension, and keep patients informed of their treatment plan and status. The Paramedic performs specialized work initiating emergent or appropriate care within their scope of practice and under the supervision of the Emergency Department Registered Nurse. They will assist both emergency department patients and outpatients to establish and maintain an effective patient flow. Responsibilities include taking vital signs, measuring and recording patient input and output, and attaching oxygen, oxygen saturation, and cardiac monitors as requested/needed. The Paramedic will initiate lifesaving measures as needed, such as opening an airway, ventilation using bag valve mask, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fractures, and cervical spine alignment. They will also stabilize and extricate injured patients from vehicles, assist patients to and from vehicles and the emergency department, and transport patients as directed. Additional duties include cleaning and dressing wounds, setting up and assisting with procedures, performing phlebotomy, basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKGs, and application of splints. The Paramedic will insert, monitor, and discontinue non-medicated IV catheters in adults and pediatric populations. They will also assist in the maintenance and operation of the department by reporting defective equipment, cleaning and stocking rooms, answering phones, and retrieving or transporting supplies. Limited medications may be administered as ordered by the attending physician upon successful completion of the "ED Paramedic Pharmacology Exam". Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • State certified EMT-P course completion
  • EMT-P Certification, State of Indiana
  • Competencies for routine clinical tests and procedures must be obtained within one year of employment in position.
  • NRP certification must be obtained within one year from hire.
  • Basic Life Safety (American Heart Association)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (American Heart Association)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (American Heart Association)
  • EMT-P Certification, State of Indiana

Responsibilities

  • Measures and records patients input and output.
  • Attaches oxygen, oxygen saturation and cardiac monitor as requested/needed.
  • Initiates lifesaving measures as needed, i.e., opening an airway, ventilation using bag valve mask, hemorrhage control, chest compressions, stabilization of fracture, cervical spine alignment, etc.
  • Stabilizes and extricates injured patients from vehicles at emergency department entrance.
  • Assists patients to and from vehicles and the emergency department.
  • Transports patients as directed.
  • Cleans and dresses wounds.
  • Sets up and assists with procedures as directed.
  • Performs phlebotomy duties, basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKGs and application of splints.
  • Inserts, monitors, and discontinues non-medicated IV catheters in adults & pediatric population and document as required.
  • Assists in the maintenance and operation of the department by: Reporting defective/broken equipment to appropriate department for repair according to protocol, cleaning and stocking rooms, answering phones, retrieving or transporting supplies, etc.
  • May administer limited medications, as ordered by the attending physician, listed on the “Paramedic Medication Administration List” upon successful completion of the "ED Paramedic Pharmacology Exam”.
  • Other duties as assigned.
