About The Position

Paramedics will respond to 911 calls for emergencies throughout Humboldt County, provide pre-hospital patient care, assist with transporting patients to higher levels of care, and assist in the Emergency Department under the direction of the Medical Director and ER Provider. Certified Paramedics will be permitted to perform duties as defined in the Iowa Emergency Medical Care Provider Scope of Practice and as defined under the certification of Paramedic. In addition to the defined Scope of Practice, Paramedics working in the Emergency Room will, under the direction of the Medical Director and ER Provider, be allowed to perform various medical tasks, including drug administration, IV pump operation, and antibiotic therapy education. They will also assist ER Nursing Staff with cleaning, restocking, patient transport, clerical duties, Activities of Daily Living, minor surgical procedures, orthopedic procedures, and triage/registration. Paramedics will also perform IV insertion/removal and be assigned to the first out ambulance for on-scene triage and transport, arranging for interfacility transports while maintaining 911 coverage.

Requirements

  • Current State of Iowa Paramedic License in good standing.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS and mandatory reporter training, or obtain within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to 911 calls for emergencies throughout Humboldt County.
  • Provide pre-hospital patient care.
  • Assist with transporting patients to higher levels of care.
  • Assist in the Emergency Department under the direction of the Medical Director and ER Provider.
  • Access, removal and administration of all drugs contained within the medication dispensing station located in the Emergency Room (IV, IM, and SQ injections).
  • Demonstrate competency in IV pump operation.
  • Receive education in Antibiotic Therapy.
  • Perform other duties delegated by nursing staff, including cleaning and restocking the Emergency Department, transporting patients, clerical duties, assisting patients with Activities of Daily Living, assisting with physical patient moving (lifting and transferring), assisting with minor surgical procedures and laceration repairs, assisting with simple orthopedic procedures, and application of elastic bandages.
  • Triage and Register emergency room patients and obtain vitals, medications, allergies and document these along with primary assessments in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Perform IV insertion/removal.
  • Be assigned to the first out ambulance for on-scene triage and transport to appropriate facility.
  • Arrange for appropriate staffing for covering interfacility transports originating from Humboldt while maintaining 911 coverage.
