Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This is a full-time position with 24-hour work shifts, involving 24 hours on and 48 hours off. The first 12 hours are hospital and ambulance-based, and the second 12 hours are ambulance-based. Paramedics demonstrate competency in trauma and medical situations, possessing the knowledge and skills to provide lifesaving interventions in a pre-hospital setting. They administer emergency care and treatment, determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, and establish priority for required emergency care. Paramedics provide advanced medical care to patients, requiring complex knowledge and skills for patient care and transportation. They may assist and direct additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders and provide emergency care to adults, infants, and children, as well as medical and trauma patients. Paramedics determine the appropriate facility for patient transport based on their assessment and knowledge of the patient's condition, unless otherwise directed. They constantly assess the patient during transport, administering additional care as indicated or directed. Paramedics may use equipment within the medical transport environment, observe, record, and report patient condition, treatment, and reactions to physicians and receiving facility staff. They maintain communication with the receiving facility for medical direction and patient status updates, and complete extensive written documentation. Paramedics also maintain communication with patients and families, offering comfort and reassurance while maintaining confidentiality. They may assist with patient care in the receiving facility, including lifting and moving patients. Additionally, they provide a welcoming and educational environment for students and complete academic assessments. Physical activities include considerable use of arms and legs, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. They attend training classes to maintain certifications and stay updated on new developments. If hired into an emergency department, paramedics work collaboratively with the nursing team under physician direction, performing tasks such as EKGs, cardiac monitoring, assisting with triage, IV therapy, respiratory management, orthopedic splinting, wound management, and other approved skills within their scope of practice.
