About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This is a full-time position with 24-hour work shifts, involving 24 hours on and 48 hours off. The first 12 hours are hospital and ambulance-based, and the second 12 hours are ambulance-based. Paramedics demonstrate competency in trauma and medical situations, possessing the knowledge and skills to provide lifesaving interventions in a pre-hospital setting. They administer emergency care and treatment, determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, and establish priority for required emergency care. Paramedics provide advanced medical care to patients, requiring complex knowledge and skills for patient care and transportation. They may assist and direct additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders and provide emergency care to adults, infants, and children, as well as medical and trauma patients. Paramedics determine the appropriate facility for patient transport based on their assessment and knowledge of the patient's condition, unless otherwise directed. They constantly assess the patient during transport, administering additional care as indicated or directed. Paramedics may use equipment within the medical transport environment, observe, record, and report patient condition, treatment, and reactions to physicians and receiving facility staff. They maintain communication with the receiving facility for medical direction and patient status updates, and complete extensive written documentation. Paramedics also maintain communication with patients and families, offering comfort and reassurance while maintaining confidentiality. They may assist with patient care in the receiving facility, including lifting and moving patients. Additionally, they provide a welcoming and educational environment for students and complete academic assessments. Physical activities include considerable use of arms and legs, climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. They attend training classes to maintain certifications and stay updated on new developments. If hired into an emergency department, paramedics work collaboratively with the nursing team under physician direction, performing tasks such as EKGs, cardiac monitoring, assisting with triage, IV therapy, respiratory management, orthopedic splinting, wound management, and other approved skills within their scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Thorough knowledge of paramedic principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of how various equipment, such as a monitor or defibrillator, work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
  • Hold national registry status at a Paramedic level.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record.
  • National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS)100, 200, 700, and 800 completed.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent, advanced version for paramedics.
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree in Paramedic Technology or Paramedicine preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent, advanced version for paramedics, International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred depending on location.

Responsibilities

  • Administer emergency care and treatment.
  • Determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and establish priority for required emergency care.
  • Provide advanced medical care to patients.
  • Assist and give direction to additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders at the scene and/or during transport.
  • Provide emergency care to adults, infants and children, medical and trauma patients.
  • Determine the appropriate facility that patients should be transported to based on their knowledge of the condition of the patients and the extent of their injuries unless otherwise indicated by medical direction.
  • Constantly assess the patient while in route to the emergency facility, administers additional care as indicated or given by medical direction.
  • Use equipment included in the medical transport environments.
  • Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment at the emergency scene and in transit to the receiving facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
  • Demonstrate good communication with the receiving facility to get medical direction and to provide patient's status and other critical information.
  • Complete extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided, as well as understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding the emergency medical service.
  • Maintain communication with the patient and the family, comforts and reassures patients and be able to demonstrate concern and courtesy while maintaining confidentiality of the patient's information.
  • Assist with patient care in the receiving facility; lifting and moving patients as required.
  • Provide welcoming and educational environment for students and complete any academic assessments in a timely fashion.
  • Attend training classes to maintain national certification, state licensure, and keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing team under the direction & supervision of the attending physician (if in ED).
  • Perform EKGs and cardiac monitoring (if in ED).
  • Assist with patient triage (if in ED).
  • Perform and maintain IV therapy (if in ED).
  • Perform respiratory management and therapy (if in ED).
  • Perform orthopedic splinting (if in ED).
  • Perform basic wound management (if in ED).
  • Perform any other skills and assessments as directed by the attending physicians (if in ED).
