About The Position

Requirements

  • High School diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Associate’s Degree in Paramedicine required OR Graduate of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) training program required OR Graduate of an Paramedic Program required.
  • Participate in mandatory in-services and continuing education programs as mandated by policies and procedures/external agencies and as directed by supervisor.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Paramedic experience preferred.
  • EMS-Paramedic providing service in the hospital is employed by or serving as a volunteer member of an Emergency Medical Service licensed by the Department.
  • Must have current valid Paramedic Certification.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire for Methodist Fremont Health Emergency
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.
  • PALS required within 6 months of hire for Women's Hospital & Methodist Hospital Emergency
  • PALS required within 1 year of hire for Methodist Fremont Health Emergency
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal relations with patients, co-workers, physicians, and guests.
  • Respectable technical skills to assure patients safety.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1 year of Paramedic experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment, as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify opportunities for and individualized customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs.
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal relations with patients, co-workers, physicians, and guests to ensure effective communication.
  • Responds to patient needs promptly and courteously.
  • Obtains feedback from patients and visitors regarding their hospital experience.
  • Communicates patient issues to the appropriate staff. (RN/MD/Core/Mid-Levels)
  • Maintains a positive attitude while responding to requests in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Actively participates in report process.
  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture or skin puncture. Collects Microbiological specimens.
  • Consistently performs correct patient identification.
  • Consistently collects the appropriate amount of specimen in the correct container for the specified tests.
  • Consistently labels all specimens with the required information.
  • Consistently transports specimen to the laboratory in a timely manner using appropriate transport procedures.
  • Accurately performs computer operations and record keeping pertaining to patient information and phlebotomy duties.
  • Consistently observes all safety regulations.
  • Assists with maintaining an environment conducive to the comfort and recovery of the patient.
  • Consistently assists in maintaining of needed equipment (scales, thermometers, etc.)
  • Consistently assists in keeping unit as neat and tidy as possible.
  • Consistently distributes linen and supplies to patient rooms when needed.
  • Performs other duties as delegated and appropriate under the direction of the Service Leader and/or RN to include medication and blood pickup.
  • Consistently answers call lights within 3 minutes.
  • Assists with or participates in certain procedures as directed by the RN and in accordance to nursing policy and procedure.
  • Consistently assists in transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Assist with procedures requiring additional monitoring or positioning (immobilization, application of immobilization devices (c-collar, splints, etc.)).
  • Consistently takes accurate vital signs including O2 sat & pain assessment.
  • Communicates any changes in patient's condition to Registered Nurse or Physician in a timely fashion.
  • Assists patients in activities, as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Consistently assists with ambulation of patients.
  • Transport patients to inpatient units requiring telemetry.
  • Transports patients to other areas as needed including non critical telemetry patients
  • Consistently assists with squad patients by changing patient into gown and initiating vital signs.
  • Consistently performs hourly rounding.
  • Participates in disaster drills and real events per the ED Core Coordinator's direction.
  • Directly responsible to the staff nurse and assists in the care of the patient by performing delegated activities utilizing the reciprocal process of the 4 Rights of Delegation.
  • Performs technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety. (Autonomy)
  • Able to competently perform technical skills independently.
  • Is accountable to learn new skills and equipment within areas' specifications and time frame.
  • Initiate insertion of peripheral intravenous catheter & IO.
  • Administer IV fluids.
  • Administer oral/ IV/ IM injections per Medical Director's approval.
  • Administer aerosol treatments.
  • Assist with CPR as directed by primary RN to include chest compressions and ventilation.

  • Communicates effectively to solve problems at the personal and unit level.

  • Maintains competence in area of experience.
  • Participates in meetings and/or committees as needed to assist in decisions effecting area/ unit or organization.
  • Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk(s) to the patient, family or hospital employees (i.e., falls, needle sticks, patient concerns.) (Quality of Care)
  • Completes appropriate report form for any risk (e.g., incident report, patient concern report, maintenance request.)
  • Communicates to appropriate personnel regarding unresolved issues.
  • Works within the scope of practice as defined by Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services.
  • Provides assistance with special projects.
  • Assists with orientation, training new personnel, and performance improvement.
  • Utilizes information systems to facilitate communication and documentation.
  • Performs ongoing assessments to determine the assigned patient's needs and implements interventions under the direction of the RN/MD.
  • Includes data from the patient/significant other(s) in the assessment as appropriate.
  • Prioritizes data collection according to patient's immediate needs.
  • Is familiar with, and follows, paramedic protocols and standards of care for their unit.
  • Uses current knowledge in paramedic practice based on standards and research literature.
