About The Position

Provides Basic and Advanced Life Support including medical evaluation, treatment and stabilization of both non-critically and critically ill or injured patients; responds to emergency rescue situations involving potential loss of life or severe bodily injury; maintains control, manages and directs patient care at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency; provides training and instruction to lesser trained personnel; operates and maintains assigned Mobile Intensive Care Unit as well as EMS Headquarters; performs other duties as required.

  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies, and judge situations and people accurately.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to prepare concise and comprehensive written reports, while remaining within commonly accepted standards for grammar.
  • Ability to work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation.
  • Ability to correctly administer therapeutic drugs and solutions.
  • Ability to maintain vehicle and equipment.
  • Ability to work 24 or 48 hour shifts to include weekends.
  • Ability to be on call 24 hours when necessary.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to respond to directions from supervising personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑employees and those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to maintain sufficient personal health and physical fitness to perform all job duties.
  • A minimum of two years experience at a level equivalent to that of a Paramedic I in the City of La Porte and a High School Diploma or GED supplemented by specialized college level training in emergency medical techniques.
  • Must maintain yearly CE hours within current TDSHS guidelines.
  • Must exercise professional initiative to stay current with new drugs and treatment procedure guidelines.
  • Must maintain ability to carry out standing orders within Medical Director's discretion.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Possession of a Texas Department of State Health Services - Paramedic (EMT-P) or Licensed Paramedic (LP).
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months, an American Heart Association - CPR Card, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate.
  • Each individual must qualify and be recertified prior to the end of the certification period.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the full range of duties assigned to the Paramedic I classification.
  • Lead and participate in the provision of pre‑hospital emergency medical care according to established medical standing orders provided by the Medical Director.
  • Assist and coordinate with other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations.
  • Perform triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the Basic and Advanced Life Support level.
  • Provide continuing care and treatment while enroute to an emergency medical facility and monitor and report changes in patient condition.
  • Under medical direction and following prescribed standing orders perform a variety of invasive and non‑invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents and solutions, intubation and pulmonary ventilation, drawing of blood samples for analysis, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock, and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills contained within the Department of Transportation manual of knowledge objectives for Paramedics.
  • Train and orient new Paramedic I, Intern and Relief Medic personnel as an assigned Field Training Officer.
  • Lead and participate in training classes for the public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid, and emergency medical techniques.
  • Lead and participate in public health screenings.
  • Employ safe lifting and moving techniques.
  • Act as a preceptor for EMS students.
  • Operate radio communications and medical telemetry equipment.
  • Keep records and logs of daily activity.
  • Maintain ambulance vehicle, equipment and ambulance station.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
