About The Position

The City of Fort Lauderdale Paramedics/Firefighters are responsible for the protection and preservation of life and property by responding to emergencies and through the performance of firefighting/rescue tasks and providing emergency medical care. Work often requires the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion, heat, noxious smoke, zero visibility and mental concentration. This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and the IAFF.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a High School graduate or possess a High School Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) from a recognized issuing agency.
  • Been a non-smoker/non-user of tobacco (any form, including products containing nicotine) for at least one (1) year prior to application, remain smoke free during application process, and agree not to smoke or use tobacco (in any form including vaping) on or off duty during the tenure of their employment.
  • Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to the certification or to perjury or false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more under the law of the United States or of any state thereof or under the law of any other country, or dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Possess a State of Florida Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training for Firefighters.
  • Possess a State of Florida Paramedic License.
  • Possess an American Heart Association BLS - CPR & AED CARD or BLS for Healthcare Provider card by American Red Cross (CPR &AED).
  • Possess an American Heart Association (ACLS) card.
  • Possess Emergency Vehicle Operator License (EVOC).
  • Be able to pass a Broward College administered Water Survival Exercise (Swim Test).
  • Possess a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by The National Testing Network.
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED.
  • A Current Driving History Record (issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles or Clerk of Courts for each State you held a driver's license, must be within the last 90 days of application).
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card from national testing network.
  • Swim card from Broward College.
  • State Of Florida Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training for Firefighters.
  • State of Florida Paramedic License.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate (EVOC) - Minimum 16-Hour Course.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) - CPR & AED Card or BLS for healthcare provider card by the American Red Cross - CPR & AED.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Card.
  • Pre-job Offer Questionnaire - Notarized.
  • Fire Rescue Tobacco Waiver - Notarized.
  • Fire Rescue Waiver of Confidential Records - Notarized.
  • If ever arrested, copies of Police Report(s) and Court Disposition(s) must be attached to the application.

Nice To Haves

  • Proof of renewal from the state of Florida must be included if certification is older than 4 years (if applicant is not employed by a Fire Department).
