About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is seeking a Paralegal to join their Louisville Trial Office. The DPA is a nationally recognized public defender system known for its training and education programs, dedicated to ensuring fairness in the criminal justice process and protecting individual liberties. This role involves assisting attorneys in representing defendants, conducting legal research and writing, reviewing records, and interviewing clients. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, detail-oriented team player with strong time management skills, capable of handling multiple time-sensitive tasks independently. Compassion for clients and commitment to the DPA's mission are essential qualities for this position.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in paralegal science or a bachelor's degree with a minor in paralegal studies OR two-year program in paralegal studies OR post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.
  • Four years of experience as a paralegal or legal secretary.
  • A Juris Doctorate or a law degree from a college of law will substitute for the education and experience requirement.
  • Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Self Directed and comfortable working with their defense team which includes attorneys, investigators, and office administrative legal staff.
  • Work under pressure.
  • Communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting attorneys in their representation of defendants.

  • Duties are performed in office, jail, prison, and courtroom settings.
