About The Position

This position is primarily responsible for providing paralegal assistance to attorneys in the Litigation Practice Group of the Civil Services Division. This paralegal will assist in all aspects of litigation, including case and file organization and management, document management, factual research and analysis, preparing, responding to and organizing discovery and disclosures, and assisting attorneys at hearings, arbitrations and trials. The successful candidate may also be called upon to perform limited legal research and preparation of initial drafts of discovery, disclosures, correspondence and some motions.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in paralegal/legal assistant studies or related field + 2 years of legal support or related experience. A paralegal certificate will substitute for the associate’s degree. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered in substitution for the minimum qualifications
  • Annual compliance requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona and certifying authority
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License at time of hire

Responsibilities

  • Produce well-written initial drafts of pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, memos, discovery requests and responses, reports and correspondence, as assigned
  • Utilize computerized research tools
  • Assist attorneys with client communications, witness interviews, depositions, civil court rules and proceedings, and trial/hearing preparation, including preparation of witness summaries, organization of exhibits, securing evidence and documentation, deposition abstracts, subpoenas and witness notifications
  • Assist attorneys in compiling annotations, indexes, and provisions of statutes, cases and administrative decisions
  • File pleadings, motions, etc. with courts and tribunals
  • Review, organize, index and Bates stamps pertinent documents for disclosure/discovery and for use in courts and tribunals
  • Analyze, organize, review and verify records and other documents obtained through the discovery process
  • Assist in updating and maintaining the database/case management system
  • Organize and maintain documents in paper and/or electronic filing system
  • Perform legal and factual research
  • Review and edit documents for accuracy
  • Locate and interview witnesses
  • Attend continuing legal education seminars and in-house training
