About The Position

The purpose of the paralegal is to provide paralegal assistance to the Claims or Legal Department and may assist in training other legal staff. This position exists to ensure the company is compliant with state law, legal matters are properly addressed, and contracts and other legal documents are correctly stored and maintained.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2-5 years related experience required.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products and department matter management system.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business or legal periodicals, professional journals, and government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university preferred with a major or emphasis in Business Administration, Management, or related field.
  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited program preferred.
  • Workers' Compensation experience highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a proactive case manager on current files handled by assigned attorneys.
  • Maintains case lists and follows up with internal personnel and outside attorneys.
  • Prepares general status letters or emails to internal personnel.
  • Communicates frequently with handling attorney regarding status of cases and attorney’s calendar.
  • Follows department procedures on handling various types of cases.
  • Prepares materials necessary for upcoming cases.
  • Contacts outside attorneys, insureds, witnesses, court reporters, interpreters, and internal representatives.
  • Prepares notice and demand letters to third parties, their carriers, and attorneys.
  • Assembles arbitration and trial exhibit materials.
  • Prepares responses to legal pleadings.
  • Processes form filings, which may include WCAB/EAMS and state filings.
  • Supports attorneys and internal representatives through administrative duties.
  • Prepares, files, and serves miscellaneous documents.
  • Summarizes depositions and reports/records.
  • Schedules and confirms appearances and other pertinent dates for attorneys and internal representatives.
  • Performs additional administrative duties such as typing, photocopying, and filing.
