About The Position

The Paralegal will assist in the support of Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) matters supporting the US Department of Justice (DOJ). This position will be focused on property law legal issues, trials and Relativity. The work requires a general knowledge of the legal processes, procedures, and practices and activities in conjunction with knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and the ability to apply these skills to support DOJ Attorneys and other members of the administrative and litigation teams. Requirements

• Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
• Basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation.
• Sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of environmental laws and regulations.
• Data analysis and mathematical ability.
• Competence in Excel and Acrobat.
• Comfortable with computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
• Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
• Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure.
• DOJ MBI must be obtainable (US Citizenship required).

Responsibilities

• Compile, prepare, and summarize relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs and other legal documents.
• Summarize depositions and other transcripts.
• Maintain case files.
• Perform simple legal research utilizing Westlaw/Lexis.
• Index, track and control document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery).
• Coordinate internal DOJ processes and maintain tight organization, reporting and status upon request.
• Update case/matter classification, identification of data gaps, inconsistencies, or errors and raising them with appropriate supervisors for comment and reconciliation.
• Index, track and create exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial.
• Prepare exhibit cross-references.
• Assist attorneys in courtroom.
• Review documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
• Compile documents for Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, production requests, Congressional inquiries, etc.
• Research and compile Division data, creating summaries and recognizing trends.
• Compile, prepare, and summarize relevant materials for use by DOJ personnel.
• Summarize requests and reports.
• Perform simple legal and factual research.
• Index, track and summarize legal and DOJ data.
• Perform other document collection related activities, including document screening, and labeling of files to be scanned.
• Perform simple database searches.
