About The Position

This means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office on a scheduled rotation once training requirements are completed. Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time. The Paralegal drafts legal documents, recovers subrogated interests, serves legal documents, prepares, and manages judgments, provides litigation support for court actions and matters before the Automobile Injury Appeal Commission, and performs various administrative tasks. Assist in-house lawyers with managing all aspects of their legal matters, including identifying, summarizing, and organizing documents relevant to a legal action.

Requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of court procedures, documents and rules, legal, medical and insurance terminology, and applicable legislation, regulations and statutory limitations.
  • Proficient knowledge of insurance recovery process in Saskatchewan.
  • Proficient knowledge of the claims process for auto, injury and general.
  • Proficient knowledge of the law pertaining to motor vehicle accidents, personal injury, and general insurance.
  • Fundamental knowledge of Saskatchewan’s Automobile Injury Appeal Commission (AIAC) procedures, document requirements and rules.
  • Two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Social Sciences or Business, or defined equivalency.
  • 1 – 3 years’ paralegal experience

Responsibilities

  • Drafts court documents and submits to in-house lawyer for approval (e.g. Statements of Claim, Statements of Defence, Affidavits of Documents, Joint Requests for Pre-Trial Conference, Answers to Undertakings, Applications to Dismiss for Want of Prosecution, Discontinuances of Claim, and Final Releases).
  • Conducts Central Recovery Unit (CRU) recoveries; drafts Statements of Claim; submits draft documents to in-house counsel for review and approval; in conjunction with CRU, negotiates repayment terms with debtors/debtors’ counsel and ensures repayment documentation is executed and payments are being made.
  • Serves court documents, including locating defendants for process servers; arranges for process servers and engages companies to locate defendants; prepares and files with the court Acknowledgments of Service or Affidavits of Service.
  • Prepares and takes out judgments with the court; registers judgments with the provincial registry, returns the file to the applicable department for licence suspension.
  • Assists with drafting of court documents.
  • Files Court documents, including knowledge of on-line filing procedures and deadlines for all levels of court and administrative tribunals.
  • Monitors applicable limitation periods.
  • Arranges for witness and expert attendance at hearings.
  • Responds to inquiries from adjusters, plaintiff lawyers, defendants, and court personnel relating to the status of files.
  • Responds to requests for additional file material or information from external lawyers acting for SGI.
  • Organizes Briefs of Law, including case law authorities and necessary documents.
  • Requisitions cheques to pay accounts and settle claims.
  • Prepares Legal Division reports (number of files, active vs closed files, etc.).
  • Arranges conflict checks, provides billing guidelines and ensures proper documentation is received for external legal counsel.
  • Works with Personal Injury Representatives to arrange independent medical examinations and organizes the necessary medical documents.
  • Organizes briefs, case law and medical documents for lawyers’ use at trial.
  • Schedules witnesses and books court reporters and hearings related to Questioning.
