About The Position

Works under direction of the Deputy General Counsel or another assigned attorney to perform experienced paralegal and notary services to support the General Counsel’s Office and other internal and external attorneys and stakeholders, including without limitation, identifying potential witnesses and record custodians, gathering responsive documents, preparing first drafts of legal filings, serving and submitting legal filings, responding to internal audits, filing claims for third-party bankruptcy proceedings, responding to unemployment insurance claims, subpoenas, and warrants issued by third-parties, organizing and maintaining legal files, the law library, and tracking the status of various litigation and bankruptcy matters, and providing assistance and general training and support as requested and appropriate in a corporate legal department. While not a required to qualify for the position, this position may (depending on qualifications and need) also entail conducting privileged and confidential investigations of various employee concerns by interviewing complainants, witnesses, and alleged bad actors, gathering and reviewing evidence, obtaining statements, and providing written summaries of the findings. It requires working closely with internal and external Attorneys, Human Resources, and other management stakeholders to provide briefings, status reports, and testimony as requested or required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and the successful completing of a paralegal program accredited by the American Bar Association as a certified Paralegal; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and experience.
  • 5 years or more experience required.
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience as an employment or litigation paralegal.
  • Knowledge about common labor and employment laws and best practices, including ADA, ADEA, FLSA, FMLA, FPA, and Title VII and similar state laws.
  • Knowledge about state and federal rules of civil procedure and legal forms.
  • Demonstrated good judgment, integrity, and discretion concerning privileged and/or confidential investigations, claims, and other legal matters.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to plan accordingly to meet deadlines.
  • The ability to work well under time pressure and in difficult situations while maintaining appropriate professional demeanor and integrity.
  • Ability to travel to various work locations and work extra or irregular hours.
  • Basic computer skills using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, research software, secure file sharing and encryption software.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations
  • Ability to interpret facial expressions, body language, and nuance to infer credibility.
  • Ability to conduct timely and effective investigations of workplace matters with discretion and tact to assist with legal advice and management decisions.

Responsibilities

  • The ability to interact with difficult personalities and with all levels of management, build trusted relationships, and assess credibility with professional discretion.
  • The ability to communicate well orally and in writing, including the ability to testify as to findings if called upon to do so in legal proceedings.
  • The ability to document, organize, and maintain materials needed for litigation, investigation, and legal research, including law library resources and legal and investigative files.
  • The ability to gather and analyze facts to draw logical conclusions supported by appropriate evidence to support investigations, litigation, and subpoena responses.
  • The ability to prepare first drafts of legal documents such as discovery responses, motions, appeals, appearances for review and by supported attorneys.
  • The ability to assist with litigation management, track deadlines, gather discovery material, and respond to internal and external audits, reports, and other legal matters.
  • Assist attorneys working on litigation and bankruptcy matters, filings, claims, and other legal projects as requested or assigned to assist attorneys.
  • The ability to coordinate witness interviews, locate responsive records, reports, memos, and provide training and assistance with various projects for the legal department and others.
