About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time (40 hours/week) Paralegal position in the Child Support Division located in our Augusta Office. This individual will provide in-office support to Child Support AAGs with heavy litigation caseloads.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of paralegal experience in a law firm, court, or legal services agency - OR - graduation from an approved, accredited paralegal program of instruction and one (1) year of paralegal experience.
  • Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • The ideal candidate must be self-directed, highly organized and accurate, with the ability to work efficiently and independently.
  • The candidate must be able to work with attorneys and staff at all levels and to communicate professionally with the client, the public, co-workers and supervisors.
  • A strong work ethic is imperative.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting multiple attorneys in a law office setting and who are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite products.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting pleadings, proposed orders and memoranda of law based upon facts of given case, ensuring that all documents comply with the appropriate law and rules.
  • Tracking large caseloads, keeping an accurate calendar of scheduled court actions and informing attorneys of deadlines and necessary appearances.
  • Reviewing, analyzing and responding to referrals provided by DHHS.
  • Preparing responsive pleadings to complaints/motions in civil and family matters.
  • Supporting busy attorneys with document review and case management.
  • Proofreading and editing documents.
  • Application of Title 19-A, Maine Rules of Civil Procedure and Family Division Rules.
  • All other responsibilities assigned by the Division Chief.
