This position encompasses work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility performed under supervision of supervisory legal assistant staff, attorneys, and/or higher level staff. The role involves conducting file reviews, providing guidance on case handling, formulating legal strategy, drafting legal documents such as Answers, Demands for Discovery, Bill of Particulars, Demand for a Change of Venue, Demand for Complaint, Response to Notices to Admit, and motions to dismiss. The Paralegal Aide will also prepare letters and memoranda for insurance takeovers, investigate and assist in the preparation for trial of less serious claims for and against the City, and secure evidence by interviewing interested parties, witnesses, officers, and other persons involved. Additionally, the role involves assisting attorneys by preparing and processing subpoenas, motions, affidavits, legal notices, and other forms related to legal proceedings and transactions. The position requires obtaining, reviewing, updating, and maintaining physical and electronic case files, as well as obtaining, collecting, assembling, and reviewing records and data for attorneys. Legal research, database and site searches, and submitting/obtaining/filing documents from various courts and City agencies are also key responsibilities. The role may involve checking records and requesting adjournments, preparing discovery materials for production, and performing routine administrative duties such as photocopying, filing, scanning, archiving, data entry, indexing, reserving conference rooms, and managing attorneys' calendars. Physical activities include lifting and carrying boxes and files, climbing stairs, and traveling throughout the City on public transportation and/or walking in various weather conditions, often carrying files.
