About The Position

This position serves as a Paraeducator Life Skills - One-on-One (Behavior) (1:1 Student Support) at Moses Lake High School. The role involves coordinating activities or performing specialized duties to assist in providing instruction to and supervision of students with behavioral challenges in various instructional and non-instructional programs, within both Special Education and General Education settings. The paraeducator will provide individualized support tailored to the specific needs of an assigned student, as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). This includes offering behavioral and academic support to help the student engage in learning and maintain emotional regulation. The direct supervisor is the student's case manager, who will guide the paraeducator in implementing strategies. A primary goal is to foster student independence in completing tasks, managing behaviors, and interacting appropriately. Paraeducators must follow the student's Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), using district-approved de-escalation techniques. Completion of Safety Care Behavioral Safety Training is mandatory. The role requires collaboration with the case manager, punctuality, and adaptability to assist with personal care tasks and academic/behavioral interventions. Ongoing professional development is expected to enhance skills in assistive technologies and behavior management. Compliance with all district policies and procedures is essential.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have earned 72 college level credits from an accredited institution of higher education, have a college degree, or be able to pass the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Assessment.
  • Previous experience working with students in both individual and small group instructional situations.
  • Working knowledge of education fundamentals.
  • Previous experience and/or training working with students in a classroom setting.
  • Proven ability to complete tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage large groups of students in an unstructured environment while maintaining a high level of safety.
  • Proven record of punctuality and consistent attendance.
  • Willingness and ability to assist students with personal management, including toileting, changing, eating, and other personal hygiene.
  • Criminal history clearance through Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  • Fingerprinting required (cost is the responsibility of the employee).
  • Completion of Safety Care Behavioral Safety Training is mandatory.
  • Must obtain and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain Safety Care certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide behavioral and academic support to students with behavioral challenges.

  • Supervise students and provide support based on their unique physical, emotional, behavioral, and academic requirements as outlined in their IEP.
  • Promote student independence by fostering skills for task completion, behavior management, and appropriate social interaction.
  • Follow the student’s Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) precisely, recognizing triggers, implementing preventive strategies, and using positive behavior supports.
  • Use district-approved de-escalation techniques and interventions to manage situations safely and effectively.
  • Assist with a range of personal care tasks, such as toileting, feeding, and mobility assistance.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to improve skills in assistive technologies, behavior management, and other support tools.
  • Adhere to all district policies and procedures, including maintaining confidentiality and supporting a positive learning environment.
  • Maintain open and regular communication with the student’s case manager, updating them on progress, behavior, and challenges.
  • Ensure punctuality and follow procedures for reporting absences.
  • Complete required Safe Schools trainings.
  • Obtain and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Obtain and maintain Safety Care certification.
  • Successfully complete the Washington State Fundamental Course of Study for Paraeducators within the first year of employment and meet future state-mandated requirements.
