About The Position

The Affective Needs Paraeducator is responsible for providing support to students with emotional and behavioral challenges under the direction of a certified teacher. The role involves assisting in the implementation of educational and behavioral plans, fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment, and helping students develop the skills necessary to succeed academically and socially.

Requirements

Adhering to safety practices
Operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications
Preparing and maintaining accurate records
Basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios
Reading a variety of manuals
Writing documents following prescribed formats
Presenting information to others
Understanding complex, multi-step written and oral instructions
Knowledge of behavior management techniques and educational strategies for students with emotional disturbances
Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices
Knowledge of age appropriate student activities

Responsibilities

Assist in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with affective needs.
Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
Provide one-on-one or small group support to students, focusing on emotional health, safety, and academic achievement.
Implement behavior intervention plans designed to manage and improve student behavior.
Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and families to support the student’s educational and emotional development.
Maintains classroom materials, equipment, and work areas for the purpose of maximizing student learning, provide a safe learning environment, and meet mandated requirements.
Model conversations, manners, active listening, organizational skills, and social behaviors for the purpose of aiding development of interpersonal skills and problem-solving strategies.
Monitor students individual and/or groups during assigned areas (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
Monitor and report on student progress, including academic performance and behavior.
Assist with daily living skills and social integration as needed.
Participate in professional development and training related to affective needs and behavior management.
Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. students, teachers, administrators, and/or parents, etc.) for the purpose of solving problems, providing information and/or directing to other appropriate parties.
