About The Position

The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) is seeking a full-time Paleontological Specialist for its Department of PaleoServices. This department focuses on the recognition, recovery, and preservation of significant paleontological resources. This role is funded through contracts and involves monitoring paleontological resources during excavation activities in the greater southern California region. Opportunities for field survey and fossil preparation may also be available.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a B.S. in Geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and a reliable vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in field paleontology and stratigraphy is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Paleontological monitoring of active mass grading, trenching, and other excavation activities into potentially fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks in the greater southern California region.
  • Work in close proximity to heavy equipment and work safely.
  • Collect unearthed fossils.
  • Record relevant stratigraphic and taphonomic data.
  • Field survey work and fossil preparation are also possible.
