About The Position

Full-time position available on or after July 6, 2026 for Building Maintenance. Under general supervision, incumbents in this classification perform the full range of skilled journey-level painting, finishing, and related work as outlined in the series overview. Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

Requirements

  • These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience, which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program.
  • Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as paint thinners, lead and asbestos.
  • Position may be required to travel.
  • Valid California Driver’s License

  • Must be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately; mix paints and finishes and match colors; erect and work from scaffolds, rigging and ladders; select the most appropriate materials.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost, time and materials of painting work.
  • Ability to maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports.
  • Provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
  • Analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
  • May be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.
  • A background check (which may include: fingerprinting, checks of employment records, education records, criminal records, civil records, motor vehicle records, professional licenses, and sex offender registries, as position requires) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with the CSU.
  • Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended.

  • CSU hires only individuals lawfully authorized to work in the United States.

  • The CSU prohibits hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Prior experience performing painting work in an institutional, commercial, or multi-building environment (e.g., university, hospital, or government facility).
  • Prior experience using various application methods (e.g., brush, roller, spray, electrostatic) and preparing surfaces (e.g., sanding, water blasting, patching).
  • Prior experience working safely with hazardous materials and complying with OSHA or Cal/OSHA standard.
  • Prior experience reading, interpreting, and working from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Prior experience working independently and managing time effectively to complete assigned work orders.
  • Prior experience collaborating with or assisting other trades (e.g., carpenters, plumbers, electricians) on shared projects

Responsibilities

  • Prepare surfaces for painting and finishing.
  • Select the most appropriate materials.
  • Apply under coats and finish coats using the full range of application methods including brush, roll, spray, and electro-static spray.
  • Hang paper.
  • Mix and match paints and finishes.
  • Perform sand and water blasting.
  • Erect scaffolding and/or hang rigging from electronic staging for painting projects.
  • Paint signs and parking lot/roadway markings.
  • Make rough sketches.
  • Advise in the selection and storage of painting materials.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
  • Inspect related work performed by contractors.
  • Estimate cost, time, and materials for painting projects.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Participate in the maintenance and operations of a paint shop.
  • Clean and maintain painting and finishing materials, tools, and equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
  • Prepare standard reports.
  • Consult and work with other trades workers.
  • May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development, based on department and/or campus needs, to stay current with industry standards.
  • At the direction of appropriate administrator, may provide support to other areas as needed.
  • The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, a logical assignment to this classification.
